Remember the Doolittle Raid? Although mocked by the Japanese as the "do nothing raid" because it was insignificant tactically, the Doolittle Raid, launched as the US was just beginning to gear up to go on offense against Japan, boosted crumbling morale and emerged as a huge strategic victory.
Even if you are not ready for full-scale combat just yet, an offensive strike now, even a small but symbolic one, would go a long way toward keeping patriots motivated to see this historic effort through to the end. Somebody needs to actually go to jail, not just be fired or resign.
