I'm shooting from the hip here but…
Freemasons split into two major groups. The group that is all about the Illuminati also recognizes the 33rd degree.
The original freemasons (e.g. our founding fathers) only recognize the 3rd degree being the highest, and this "branch" of freemasons are generally good folks.
That makes sense…there are bad apples in both carts, it's just that one "side's" cart is a lot bigger kek.
