I don't know about anon's speculation.

But Trudeau was desperate to keep SNC's fuckery under wraps.

What you are seeing now is not the fuckery — it is the aftermath of the fuckery.

The fuckery was all the behind-the-scenes lobbying to change the criminal code to implement a clause specifically to allow SNC to circumvent serious bribery charges. And hiding the criminal code changes in a one-paragraph section of an omnibus budget bill.

The scandal you see in the news is that the AG saw through it, said "fuck that, SNC can face the charges anyway", then Trudeau and his goons had several pointed discussions with the AG asking her if she wasn't sure she didn't want to change her mind.

But the real scandal goes back farther than that (and probably even farther than that).

A couple of articles that go into the back story.

Initially it was good as a "strength in numbers" exercise. But agree that it makes us look a little like the NPCs that we mercilessly mocked a few months ago. What, is that all we have to contribute?
