Company offers to build 234 miles of border wall for $1.4 billion

A U.S. company is offering to build 234 miles of President Trump's border wall for just $1.4 billion, a fraction of the $8 billion the Trump administration is hoping to use for that project.

Fisher Sand and Gravel Company's President and CEO Tommy Fisher said the government is overpaying and that for $4.31 billion, he can build the wall and incorporate paved roads and border technology plus warranty.

"Our whole point is to break through the government bureaucracy," Fisher told the Washington Examiner. "If they do the small procurements as they are now … that’s not going to cut it."

Of the $8 billion Trump is hoping to spend, he already has $1.375 billion of that amount from Congress, which can only be used to build fencing in the Rio Grande Valley. Trump is seeking to repurpose another $3.1 billion in defense funding for more border wall and $3.6 billion more through his emergency declaration that Congress and the courts will challenge.

Fisher said that the roughly $1.4 billion is enough to build 20 miles of levee wall in the Rio Grande Valley, plus another 214 miles. That pot of money, however, can only be used in the Rio Grande Valley, according to the bill Congress passed approving those funds and was only expected to be used for about 55 miles of steel slat fencing.

The Army Corps of Engineers is not ready to start looking at how to spend the $8 billion that Trump is hoping to spend on the wall, a representative told the Washington Examiner last week. The corps is considering how to spend money Congress gave DHS last fiscal year and has not requested bids from the private sector because it's still in the procurement process.

Replacement and new wall projects have struggled to get underway in Trump's first two years in office. Just 35 miles of wall have gone up in that time. The Army Corps of Engineers has procured around 75 miles but has not awarded $900 million for the project of the $1.35 billion that was in the 2018 omnibus.

DHS officials and several lawmakers are expected to visit the site of his border wall construction site in Arizona next week.

GOP chairman eyes move to lock in Trump's Iran deal withdrawal

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) said Tuesday he’d like to include language in the annual defense policy bill that codifies President Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

Inhofe was speaking to reporters in his office about a congressional delegation trip last month that included stops in Germany, Israel, Kosovo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Algeria.

Throughout the trip, Inhofe, a Trump supporter, said he found that countries such as Iran were “waiting Trump out."

“They think he’s going to be defeated,” Inhofe said. “The Iranians are waiting to reestablish the deal that [former Secretary of State] John Kerry made, and they’re all assuming that he’ll be out of office.”

To address that, Inhofe argued, Congress needs to codify what it can of actions Trump has taken, particularly support for Israel’s military and the withdrawal from the Iran deal.

“Both of those thing we can pass in the Senate,” Inhofe said. “It’s not going to be quite as easy to pass in the House. … I’ll be doing that, and we’ll be addressing that.”

Pressed further on whether there will be something in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to make Trump’s Iran deal withdrawal permanent, Inhofe said, “mhm.”

Asked for elaboration by The Hill, a spokeswoman for Inhofe said putting language in the NDAA codifying the Iran deal withdrawal is a goal of his, but that he’s flexible on the exact form since his priority is ultimately getting the NDAA passed.

Such language would likely be a nonstarter in the Democratic-controlled House, with which the Senate will have to negotiate to get the NDAA to the president’s desk.

Trump announced last year he was withdrawing the United States from the 2015 nuclear deal and reimposed all the sanctions that had been lifted as part of the deal.

The agreement, reached by the Obama administration with Iran, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, China and Russia, gave Iran billions of dollars in sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program.

Regional experts have said Iran continues to abide by the terms in the nuclear deal in part because they are hoping Trump is a one-term president and that his successor will return to the accord.

International inspectors said last month Iran remains within the key limits of its nuclear activities imposed by the deal.

New Google Chrome Zero-Day Vulnerability Found Actively Exploited in the Wild

You must update your Google Chrome immediately to the latest version of the web browsing application.

Security researcher Clement Lecigne of Google's Threat Analysis Group discovered and reported a high severity vulnerability in Chrome late last month that could allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code and take full control of the computers.

The vulnerability, assigned as CVE-2019-5786, affects the web browsing software for all major operating systems including Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, and Linux.

Without revealing technical details of the vulnerability, the Chrome security team only says the issue is a use-after-free vulnerability in the FileReader component of the Chrome browser, which leads to remote code execution attacks.

What's more worrisome? Google warned that this zero-day RCE vulnerability is actively being exploited in the wild by attackers to target Chrome users.

"Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix," the Chrome security team notes. "We will also retain restrictions if the bug exists in a third party library that other projects similarly depend on, but haven’t yet fixed."

FileReader is a standard API that has been designed to allow web applications to asynchronously read the contents of files (or raw data buffers) stored on a user's computer, using 'File' or 'Blob' objects to specify the file or data to read.

'Useful to Keep Them Nervous': LISTEN as Top Trump Aide Blabs US Venezuela Plans

Vovan and Lexus, Russian telephone pranksters known for their trolling of politicians from around the world, have struck again, targeting US special representative for Venezuela Elliott Abrams to find out more about the US-backed effort to unseat that country's legitimate government. Sputnik got ahold of the full audio from the talks.

Posing as Swiss President Ueli Maurer, who also serves as the country's finance minister, the pranksters contacted Abrams on two occasions – in mid-February and early March, speaking to him for over 23 minutes about Swiss policy on the ongoing effort to freeze the Venezuelan government's assets as part of broader plans to replace President Nicolas Maduro with US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

The highlight of the pair of conversations was when 'Maurer' asked Abrams about the chances of Washington following through with its threat to use military force to topple Maduro. Here is what he revealed:

"You know, we are not going to do that. Unless the regime does something completely crazy like attacking the US embassy. But our information suggests that people in the regime and in the military are actually nervous about a US invasion. And we think it is useful to keep them nervous, which is one reason why we will not say publicly 'no, no, no, this will never happen.'"

"In private briefings to members of Congress, this is exactly what I say to them, [that] 'we are not trying to make you in Congress nervous. We are trying to make the Venezuelan military nervous. And we think that it is a mistake tactically to give them endless reassurances that there will never be American military action.' But I can tell you this is not what we're doing. What we're doing is what you see – financial pressure, economic pressure, diplomatic pressure, political pressure," Abrams said.

Close Interest in Personal Accounts

Assuring Bern that the US asset freezes against Venezuelan government-related entities and individuals were aimed at "just trying to preserve assets," Abrams seemed particularly interested in Swiss efforts to block individual accounts, disclose their contents, and transfer them to Guaido's allies.

"Tell me if you would about the confidentiality questions here. For example, if you meet next week with representatives of Guaido in the national assembly and you say to them 'we have blocked this account or that account', are they then free to not only access the account, but are they free to announce things?" Abrams asked.

When the pranksters assured him that the answer was 'yes', the representative said he "didn't realise that," adding that "that's obviously great, frankly it's a great help to Guiado."

LAVROV: Syrians in Fake Refugee Camp are Actually Hostages – Cover for U.S Base

DAMASCUS – Russia will seek to have the U.S withdraw refugees from the Er-Rukban camp in southern Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on March 6th.

He drew attention to the fact that this camp serves not only to save people who are now essentially isolated, but also to realize the interests of foreign states illegally present in the Arab Republic. He went to explain that the refugees being held at the camp are not refugees, but prisoners.

“The US position on the Er-Rukban camp suggests that Washington needs it to justify its military presence in Syria,” RIA Novosti quotes the minister .

The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry said that the Russian Federation and the United States are maintaining military and political contacts on Syria, since this is important for tracking and understanding what is happening in the Arab Republic. However, in Washington, as Lavrov noted, they are “not always transparent” about their actions in this country.

Earlier, on March 2, it was reported that the United States refused to let Syrian transport convoys, which were sent for the refugees from Er-Rukban, in the Al-Tanf zone. Later, Moscow and Damascus declared that there could be no question of any next humanitarian convoy to the camp as long as the residents of “Er-Rukban” were being held hostage by American-controlled gangs.

The Er-Rukban camp is located in the south of Syria in the USA-controlled Al Tanf zone. According to experts, it may have about 40 thousand people, and the only solution to the problem of the continued survival of these people is the evacuation of these Syrians to temporary accommodations in Damascus-controlled territory.

Thus, according to a public opinion poll conducted by humanitarian workers, 95% of its residents expressed a desire to leave the camp in the near future, of which 83% intend to return to their former places of residence. The main reasons for the Syrians desire to go to a Damascus controlled territory was cited as the lack of work (47%), living conditions (30%), and the inability to ensure the safety of the family (23%), writes the Federal News Agency .

In September 2015, at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Russia launched an operation in the Arab Republic to fight terrorists in Syria. At the same time, Damascus did not invite the American military to its territory and repeatedly pointed out that the United States and the international coalition were there illegally and would have to leave the country.

How Not to React When You Are Smeared as an Anti-Semite

Never apologize. Make no concessions. Go on the offensive. Attack the smearers because they are the true villains.

High profile recent targets - Corbyn, Omar, and Gabbard - are breaking these rules, and paying the consequences.

Anyone who opposes western interventionism or thinks the poor are human beings is a Russian antisemite. If you disagree, it’s because you are a Russian antisemite, too.

Narrative is a funny thing. You can do everything right, cross all your ‘T’s and dot all your ‘I’s and color within all the official lines, but if you offend the powerful they can still rearrange the dominant narrative underneath you to kill your public influence.

In Venezuela right now some guy named Juan is being elevated to the leadership of the nation simply by the governments of other nations referring to him as “President Guaido” and denying the legitimacy of the actual guy who is running the Venezuelan government. The funny thing about that is if enough people believe it, it can theoretically work; the only thing keeping leaders in place is the agreed-upon narrative that they’re the leaders. If you can replace that narrative with a different one, as powerful people are currently attempting to do, in theory it is possible to effect a coup by pure narrative. You couldn’t ask for a more perfect illustration of the power of narrative control.

Smear campaigns work in the same way. Anyone challenging authorized narratives and the status quo of oligarchic hegemony can have their reputations destroyed by the lackeys of the plutocratic class which exerts massive influence over the political/media class, thereby neutralizing their ability to influence the public. If the public distrusts someone, they aren’t going to believe the narratives that that person is putting forward, even if those narratives are as sane as protecting the poor, opposing senseless warmongering, or defending Palestinian rights. In today’s political climate where smearing someone as a socialist or communist is increasingly ignored, the most effective smear campaigns are currently those which paint the target as a servant of the Kremlin or a hater of Jews.

They are trying to control the narrative about you, so the idea is to take back that control of your narrative. You don’t need to convince everyone that you’re right, you just need to prevent their malicious narrative about you from becoming the one everyone accepts as true because that’s what everyone else is saying. Most people believe things not because of facts and evidence, but because other people in their life believe those things. If you can create enough doubt in the malicious narratives being circulated about you and enough trust in your own, you can punch through that dynamic of unanimous consensus and keep your influence from being killed.

When you see it for what it actually is, a smear campaign is actually really gross to look at. People have a natural revulsion to manipulation and deception once they’ve seen it, especially when it’s done in the service of the powerful against the interests of the disempowered. All you need to do, then, is forcefully draw attention to what they’re doing to the point where their engagement in the smear campaign makes them look worse than they’re trying to make you look. This will kill their ability to manipulate public perception of you.

It sucks to have to do this. It feels really gross to keep having to wade into the muck and fight your smearers on their level, but the alternative is letting them control the narrative about you, which is the same as handing them control over your voice and, to an extent, your life. Because you can be one hundred percent certain that they will not cease working to kill public trust in you and your words if you just ignore them or be nice to them hoping that they will stop. Remember, they are not actually concerned about you being a Nazi/antisemite/Putin-lover/Assadist; they don’t actually care about fighting antisemitism in the way you or any healthy adult does. They have one simple goal, and that is to kill off your influence over the herd. Keep putting out your own message as well; don’t let fighting smears become the majority of your output, but don’t give them a single inch of control over the public narrative about you, either.

If you see someone smearing Corbyn, Omar, Gabbard, or any other target of establishment smear campaigns like Julian Assange, the best way to help them continue to disrupt the narrative matrix is to (A) refute the smear, then (B) aggressively expose the smearer for what they are and what they’re about. Whoever controls the narrative controls the world, and whoever controls the narrative about a particular thing controls that thing. If that particular thing is something or someone you care about, don’t let them control the narrative about it. Never treat an argument made in bad faith like it’s an argument made in good faith. Expose their lies and force a conversation about the despicable tactic that they are employing.

Israeli Jewish settlers took over a Palestinian house in Jerusalem’s Old City on Tuesday, Quds Press has reported. The property is owned by the Al-Halaby family.

An informed source said that a group of Jewish settlers took over the house when its owner was away, noting that all of the woman’s clothing and furniture are still in the house. Israeli police apparently did not respond immediately to the calls of the Palestinians to protect the house from the colonial-settlers, who attacked neighbours and passers-by with pepper spray. When the police eventually did make an appearance, they arrested five Palestinian youths, but did nothing about the settlers.

According to Quds Press, part of this particular house was leased to the Jewish settlers by real estate dealer Isam Aqel, who was arrested by the Palestinian Authority last month. After he was sentenced to life in prison, he was allowed to travel to the US, having been handed over by Israel. He is now living in a safe house in America.

Jared Kushner and the triumph of Saudi Arabia

In the Gulf they joke that Saudi-US relations are run by the crown prince and “the clown prince”. The first, Mohammed bin Salman, is Saudi Arabia’s strongman. The second, Jared Kushner, is Donald Trump’s son-in-law. If it were not for their friendship, relations between the US and the House of Saud might be in serious crisis. But Mr Kushner has an Arab-Israeli peace plan up his sleeve.

In his view Saudi backing will be key to its success. Which means the Saudis can get away with nearly anything — alleged royal-instigated killing, for example — as long as they hold out the prospect of backing Mr Kushner. To say the least, Prince Mohammed has the better of the bargain. Few people give Mr Kushner’s peace plan ironically dubbed “deal of the century” much chance. The epithet “dead on arrival” has become standard even before the plan has arrived.

Mr Kushner bears most of the blame for this. He encouraged Mr Trump to move the US embassy to Jerusalem last year, oppose a Palestinian right of return, withdraw diplomatic recognition from the Palestine Liberation Organization and slash aid to the UN relief agency.

This has all but assured Arab rejection of whatever plan Mr Kushner produces. Having initially sounded positive, Prince Mohammed has recently gone quiet. Whatever the crown prince owes Mr Kushner, he would be rash to lead a funeral march for Palestinian dreams.

Israel exports violence and human rights rhetoric to Africa

As part of Tel Aviv’s diplomatic strategy in Africa, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) are providing military training to local troops in several countries. The Times of Israel has described this venture as “a dramatic upsurge of military cooperation.”

Israel’s military attaché to Africa, Colonel Aviezer Segal, has said that the Israelis treat African leaders “with respect and appreciation and deal with them as equals, in a language of true camaraderie, personal friendship and professionalism.”

Last year, the Jerusalem Post ran an article in which it attempted to put Israel on a par with African countries involved in anti-colonial struggle. According to the article, the settler-colonial state “was itself part of the great counter-colonial movement that freed millions from Europeans’ yoke.” When the Chadian Prime Minister Idris Deby visited Israel in November last year, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin declared, “For us, Africa is the future.”

Israel has established a way of disguising diplomacy as development or humanitarian endeavours; it’s a colonial trend that Europe still exhibits in relation to Africa and the Middle East. In both cases, the aim is to keep African migrants away from their borders and profit from the process by creating new colonial frameworks in Africa. For such designations to succeed, of course, it is necessary to emphasise leadership ties over the human impact of exploitation.

Israel forces arrest 13-year-old Palestinian in the middle of the night

Israeli occupation forces detained a 13-year-old Palestinian child in the middle of the night, according to human rights group B’Tselem.

Adam Abu Ryalah’s family home in Issawiyah, occupied East Jerusalem, was raided by eight Israeli Border Police officers at 4am on Sunday, 10 February, while 20 more officers waited outside.

As recounted by B’Tselem, the Israeli forces ordered Adam’s parents to wake their son and bring him to the living room, after which an officer then returned Adam to his room with his mother and ordered him to get dressed. Adam was arrested, and taken to a police station.

When Adam’s parents went to the police station, they were “told their son was not there”. After waiting for hours, it was only by chance – at around 12.30pm – that they saw their son “when an officer escorted him to the bathroom”.

Adam was held at the police station for nine hours and interrogated alone – “with no parent or lawyer present”. He was finally released, after 11 hours in detention, to house arrest for four days.

B’Tselem noted that “this case is not unusual”, but is “part of a consistent policy pursued by the Israeli authorities in East Jerusalem, which does not treat Palestinian minors as entitled to special protections. Instead, arrest is almost always the measure of first, rather than last, resort and the rights of the minors are systematically violated throughout the process”.

Israel analysts warn of ‘four front’ escalation with Palestinians

Israeli analysts have warned of a potential “four fronts” escalation with the Palestinians.

According to a report in Ynet, the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza Strip, as well as Palestinian prisoners, are all arenas which “are extremely volatile for different reasons”.

In the West Bank, analysts point to economic hardship in light of the Palestinian Authority (PA)’s rejection of monthly tax revenues, following Israeli punitive deductions.

The Israeli report claimed that senior PA officials believe the financial deficit “is only expected to deepen, adversely impacting the Palestinian defence establishment and its intelligence outreach in the West Bank, and even helping Hamas to establish military infrastructure across the territories.”

In the Gaza Strip, meanwhile, the report noted how night-time confrontations have increased, as well as Israeli military strikes on Hamas positions in the blockaded enclave.

In East Jerusalem, Palestinian worshippers and the Waqf are determined to keep open a formerly-shuttered portion of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound – Bab Al-Rahma – which Israeli occupation authorities have ordered be closed again.

The article notes that Israeli “police have carried out extensive arrests and issued restraining orders instructing senior Waqf officials as well as Palestinian activists to stay away” from the compound. Further protests are expected.

Finally, the report highlights the decision by Israel’s Public Security Ministry “to install cell phone jammers” in prisons holding Palestinian prisoners, prompting protests. There is the prospect of further unrest, and a hunger-strike.

New poll: Americans’ support for Israel declines to lowest point in a decade

WASHINGTON — Support for Israel in the American public is at its lowest point in a decade, according new Gallup poll released Wednesday, with a whopping decline among self-identified Republicans who said they sympathized more with Israelis than Palestinians.

Whereas 65 percent of Americans said they were “more sympathetic” to Israel over the Palestinians in 2018, 59% said the same in 2019, marking a six point drop. That decline is the biggest over a one-year period in the history of the poll, which began in 2001. The number of Americans who said they sympathized more with the Palestinian, however, went unchanged over the last year, remaining at 21 percent.

The 2019 survey found that the decline in sympathy for Israel extended to both Democrats and Republicans. While support for Israel among Democrats dropped by 6%, Republican support declined by 13%, a staggering figure in light of Republican President Donald Trump’s cultivation of an intensely close relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The percentage of Republicans saying they sympathize more with Israel in the conflict fell from an all-time high of 87% in 2018 to 76% today,” the poll said.

The percentage of people who identified as political independents remained the same over the last year, with 60% sympathizing more with Israel.

Last year’s survey came as the administration was preparing to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which infuriated Palestinians.

US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, left, and US national security adviser John Bolton, visit the US Embassy in Jerusalem, on August 21, 2018. (Matty Stern/US Embassy Jerusalem)

Since Trump officially recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017, and subsequently moved the embassy there, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has refused to engage with the White House, which he said had compromised its ability to act as an honest mediator in any negotiations.

In ostensible retaliation for the Palestinians refusal to work with Trump’s diplomatic team, which has been trying to broker an Israeli-Palestinian peace accord, and in order to exact pressure to return them to the negotiating table, Trump cut American aid to the PA, the East Jerusalem Hospital Network, and even Israeli-Palestinian coexistence agencies.

The dip in American sympathy for Israel notwithstanding, the vast majority of Americans still hold a favorable view of Israel. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents said they favored Israel over the Palestinian Authority, while just 21% said they preferred the latter.

Gallup’s survey interviewed 1,016 adults from February 1 to 10; it has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The poll was conducted amid an intense controversy regarding the US-Israel relationship in Congress. It occurred shortly after freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar apologized for having insinuated that wealthy American Jews paid politicians to be pro-Israel (through the machinery of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC).

Netanyahu wants the US to attack Iran; latest fact less claim

Netanyahu: Iran resorts to oil smuggling by sea to evade U.S. sanctions There was no immediate response from Tehran.

Israel's navy could take action against Iranian oil smuggling, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday, urging world powers to foil any effort by Tehran to evade US sanctions.

The Israeli leader told naval officers that Iran was still resorting to clandestine measures to ship fuel that it first used prior to a 2015 nuclear deal easing Western sanctions on its oil sector.

US President Donald Trump last year quit the nuclear deal and reimposed some sanctions, aiming to cut Iran's oil exports to zero.

"Iran is trying to circumvent the sanctions through covert oil smuggling over maritime routes, and to the extent that these attempts widen, the navy will have a more important role in blocking these Iranian actions," Netanyahu said.

"I call on the entire international community to stop Iran's attempts to circumvent the sanctions by sea, and of course, by any (other) means."

It was not clear how Israel would stop such shipping activities or whether it would risk direct confrontation at sea with Iranian vessels. The Israeli navy, whose largest vessels are missile corvettes and a small submarine fleet, is mostly active in the Mediterranean and Red seas.

According to maritime experts, Iranian oil smuggling methods have included changing the names of ships or flag registries, switching off location transponders on ships and conducting ship-to-ship transfers offshore and away from large trade hubs.

There was no immediate response from Tehran.
