In a surprise move for a high-profile public corruption case, federal prosecutors in Chicago have agreed to drop all charges against former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock if he pays back money he owes to the Internal Revenue Service and his campaign fund.

The stunning deal, known as a deferred prosecution agreement, was announced Wednesday during what was supposed to be a routine status hearing for Schock before U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly.

The man who assaulted a conservative activist at the University of California in Berkeley was charged with three felonies and one misdemeanor, according to Alameda Superior Court online records.

Zachary Greenberg, 28, was charged on March 5 with assault “likely to produce great bodily injury,” battery with serious bodily injury, criminal threats, and the misdemeanor—vandalism with damages under $400.

The first two felony charges carry sentences of up to four years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. The third charge ties to a maximum of one year in prison, while the misdemeanor can also send one to jail for up to a year and/or bring one a fine of up to $1,000.

On March 1, campus police booked Greenberg into jail after he was believed to be the man who was caught on camera punching conservative activist Hayden Williams at the university campus on Feb. 19.

Greenberg allegedly hit Williams multiple times, including one punch directly in the face, which was caught on video and widely circulated online.
