Born in Landstuhl, Germany, Seeborg earned a Bachelors of Arts in history summa cum laude from Yale University in May 1978 and then earned a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 1981.[2] From 1981 until 1982, Seeborg served as a law clerk to United States District Judge John H. Pratt.[2][3]

Magistrate judges are appointed to eight-year terms by the courts and earn about $155,000 annually, while federal district judges, who have broader powers, are appointed for life by the president and earn $174,000 a year.
Before joining the federal bench in 2001, Seeborg worked in the San Francisco and Palo Alto offices of Morrison & Foerster. Seeborg also spent seven years as a federal prosecutor in San Jose, specializing in complex white-collar crime cases, particularly securities fraud prosecutions.
