UK sells $445m of arms to Israel, including sniper rifles

LONDON - Britain has approved the sale of arms to Israel worth $445m since the 2014 Gaza war, including components for drones, combat aircraft and helicopters along with spare parts for sniper rifles, according to figures seen by Middle East Eye.

The government data will raise fresh concerns that British-made weapons are being used by the Israeli military in the Occupied Territories, amid fears that components in sniper rifles used to kill scores of Palestinian civilians in recent weeks could have been made in the UK.

Arms export licences to Israel soared to £216m, or $300m at current exchange rates, last year from £20m in the wake of the Gaza war, new Department for International Trade figures show.

They include a major £183m licence covering "technology for military radars", but ministers have also approved the sale for export of grenades, bombs, missiles, armoured vehicles, assault rifles, small arms ammunition, sniper rifles and components for sniper rifles.

The value of arms approvals to Israel more than doubled last year after £84m in sales in 2016, prompting campaigners to warn that there is "little doubt" that UK-made weapons have been used in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The Campaign Against the Arms Trade, or CAAT, which compiled the figures, expressed concern that UK-made radar technology could be used by Israeli jets and helicopters over the Occupied Territories.

However, it is the scale of small arms sales that have prompted fears UK-made sniper rifle components and targeting scopes may have been used by the Israeli military on the Gaza border.

House Intel Committee Leaks to CNN: Cohen Gives Documents to House Panel on Trump Attorney Alleged Changes to 2017 Testimony

It appears serial leaker and liar House Intel Chairman Adam Schiff is once again leaking information to CNN during a closed-door testimony in an effort to attack President Trump with smears.

Michael Cohen appeared before the House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday in a closed-door interview and CNN coincidentally received information as the hearing was taking place.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Michael Cohen provided the House Intelligence Committee with documents showing alleged edits to his false written statement that he delivered to the Senate Intel Panel in 2017 about the Trump Organization’s efforts to potentially build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

CNN cited “multiple sources familiar with the matter,” on Wednesday as they played waterboy for House Intel Chairman Adam Schiff.

Michael Cohen on Wednesday provided the House Intelligence Committee with new documents showing edits to the false written statement he delivered to Congress in 2017 about the Trump Organization’s pursuit of the Trump Tower Moscow project into the 2016 campaign season, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.

The documents Cohen provided are intended to further explain his public testimony last week, in which Cohen said that President Donald Trump’s then-personal lawyer Jay Sekulow made changes to his statement to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, and that it was reviewed ahead of time by lawyers like Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, the President’s daughter and son-in-law who are both White House advisers.

It’s unclear what Cohen’s documents show was specifically changed in the statement. Cohen is testifying Wednesday behind closed doors at the House Intelligence Committee.

“There were changes made, additions — Jay Sekulow, for one,” Cohen said last week. “There were several changes that were made including how we were going to handle that message, which was — the message of course being — the length of time that the Trump Tower Moscow project stayed and remained alive.”

Trump’s personal attorney Jay Sekulow refuted Michael Cohen’s claims last week that lawyers for the President edited Cohen’s statement.

Sekulow said the “testimony by Michael Cohen that attorneys for the President edited or changed his statement to Congress to alter the duration of the Trump Tower Moscow negotiations is completely false.”

Michael Cohen was sentenced to 36 months in prison in December for lying to Congress and other crimes related to his taxi medallion business and is scheduled to report to prison on May 6th.

Top GOP lawmakers criminally referred Michael Cohen to the Justice Department twice over statements he made to the House Oversight Committee last week.

Cohen was criminally referred by Reps. Meadows and Jordan for failing to file a FARA form for his foreign lobbying efforts and for ‘committing perjury.’

In the meantime, the Democrat-controlled House Intel Panel chaired by Adam Schiff will selectively leak information to CNN to harass and smear President Trump.

It is way past time for Adam Schiff to be removed from the House Intel Panel – Michael Cohen even said that he consulted with Adam Schiff and the Committee last week before he appeared for his testimony.

Retired CIA Agent: “We Run the Afghan Opium Trade”

A retired CIA agent recently convicted of possession of child pornography accuses the US government of trying to frame him as he is about to release a book that will “blow the lid off the CIA’s drug smuggling operations in Afghanistan” reveals the Cheyenne Herald this morning.

John F. Abbotsford, a 38-year old Afghan war veteran, that has also served his country as a CIA analyst, has recently been convicted of possession of child pornography, accusations he claims “have been made up” by the US government to stop the publication of his upcoming book, the CIA in Afghanistan: 30 years of drug smuggling.

“This is a desperate attempt by the US government to shut me up” he said in court.

“If I’m going to face jail time, I want the truth to be known before they try to get rid of me in prison” he told the judge.

“I’m not scared of their threats, whatever happens, I will never shut up” he cried out in the courtroom.

During the court session, the retired CIA operative refused to answer all questions concerning the child pornography possession charges and kept talking about alleged CIA drug smuggling related events in Afghanistan.

“I’m ashamed to say that I have participated in these drug smuggling operations on many occasions. For a long time, I tried to convince myself that we were doing it for the right cause, but this burden is destroying me inside and I just can’t stand it anymore” he admitted before the court audience.

“The CIA has been dealing drugs since its creation. They’ve been smuggling drugs everywhere in the world for the past 60 years, in Taiwan in 1949 to support General Chiang Kai-shek against the Chinese commies, in Vietnam, in Nicaragua, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg” he launched out during the court trial.

Militarised Conservation: “Paramilitary Rangers” and the World Wild Life Fund (WWF)

Think charity, think vulnerability and its endless well of opportunistic exploitation. Over the years, international charity organisations have been found with employees keen to take advantage of their station. That advantage has been sexual, financial and, in the case of allegations being made about the World Wild Life Fund for Nature, in the nature of inflicting torture on those accused of poaching.

BuzzFeed, via reporters Tom Warren and Katie J.M. Baker, began the fuss with an investigative report claiming instances of torture and gross violence on the part of rangers assisted by the charity to combat poaching. It starts with a description of a dying man’s last days, one Shikharam Chaudhary, a farmer who was brutally beaten and tortured by forest rangers patrolling Chitwan National Park in Nepal. Shikharam, it seems, had been singled out for burying a rhinoceros horn in his backyard. The horn proved elusive, but not the unfortunate farmer, who was detained in prison. After nine days, he was dead.

Three park officials including the chief warden were subsequently charged with murder. WWF found itself in a spot, given its long standing role in sponsoring operations by the Chitwan forest rangers. As the BuzzFeed report goes on to note,

“WWF’s staff on the ground in Nepal leaped into action – not to demand justice, but to lobby for the charges to disappear. When the Nepalese government dropped the case months later, the charity declared its victory in the fight against poaching. Then WWF Nepal continued to work closely with the rangers and fund the park as if nothing had happened.”

The report does not hold back, insisting that the alleged murder of the unfortunate Shikharam in 2006 was no aberration.

“It was part of a pattern that persists to this day. In national parks across Asia and Africa, the beloved non-profit with the cuddly panda logo funds, equips, and works directly with paramilitary forces that have been accused of beating, torturing, sexually assaulting, and murdering scores of people.”

The poach wars are a savage business, throwing up confected images of heroes and villains. They do not merely involve the actions of protecting animals, but military-styled engagements where fatalities are not uncommon. Anti-poaching has become a mission heralded by the romantically inclined as indispensable, its agents to be celebrated. Desperate local conditions are conveniently scrubbed out in any descriptions: there are only the noble rangers battling animal murderers.

The Akashinga, for instance, are an anti-poaching enterprise of 39 women operating in Zimbabwe who featured with high praise in a report from the ABC in October last year. Who are the victims, apart from the animals they protect? There is little doubt in the minds of the reporters: the women themselves, victims of assault, many single mothers from Nyamakate. Laud them, respect their mission.

It is clear is that these women are feted warriors, armed and given appropriate training. They “undergo military-style training in unarmed combat, camouflage and concealment, search and arrest, as well as leadership and conservation ethics.” Their source of encouragement and support is Damien Mander, formerly a military sniper and founder of the International Anti-Poaching Foundation.

Mander’s own laundry list for being a “good anti-poaching ranger”, as featured in an interview to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre in 2015, is unvarnished: “A passion for nature, strong paramilitary base, and ability and willingness to work in hostile environments for extended periods of time as part of a team.”

Democrats in ‘Full-Scale Brawl’ over Antisemitism Resolution

House Democrats cannot agree on a resolution to condemn antisemitism, and a closed-door meeting Wednesday to discuss the issue reportedly collapsed into infighting as rank-and-file members challenged the party leadership.

The meeting “erupted into a full-scale brawl Wednesday,” the Washington Post reported, as some “protested plans to vote this week on a resolution condemning religious hatred, a measure prompted by [Minnesota Rep. Ilhan] Omar’s comments last week suggesting supporters of Israel have “allegiance to a foreign country” (original link).

Omar, who apologized last month for antisemitic comments, set off a new crisis last week when she accused pro-Israel Americans of “allegiance to a foreign country.” Democrat leaders, who have tried to portray President Donald Trump as a bigot, tried to manage the political fallout by promising a vote on a resolution condemning antisemitism on Wednesday. The resolution did not mention Omar specifically, and also condemned anti-Muslim prejudice.

The Post noted: “Initially the measure targeted only anti-Semitism, with some Democrats pushing for a direct rebuke of Omar, but by Tuesday night — facing backlash from members not on board with the plan — leaders decided to expand it to include anti-Muslim bias.” Even that was not good enough for the Democratic caucus.

In contrast, a resolution passed in January — and supported by Republicans — to condemn racist remarks by Rep. Steve King (R-IA) mentioned King specifically in the opening sentence. Republicans also stripped King of his committee assignments. Democrat leaders have declined to remove Omar from her committees — including the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where she oversees U.S.-Israel relations, among other contentious issues.

Speaker Pelosi could not commit Wednesday to a date for a vote on a resolution condemning antisemitism, and said that she did not think Omar’s comments had been “intentionally” antisemitic — even though Omar repeated them after House Foreign Affairs Committee chair declared publicly that Omar had used a “vile anti-Semitic slur.”

Many pro-Israel Democrats — most of whom are not Jewish — have bristled at Omar’s suggestions that they owe allegiance to Israel, or that they had been bribed by pro-Israel groups. But the party has yet to take any action.

Earlier this month, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who had earlier defended Omar against charges of antisemitism, promised the party would take “further action” if she failed to learn and persisted in her rhetoric.

Putin warns that foreign spy agencies are beefing up activities in Russia

Russian special services uncovered 129 staff members and 465 agents of foreign intelligence agencies in 2018

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. Foreign intelligence services have set their sights on increasing their influence over all that is happening in Russia, President Vladimir Putin said at a board meeting of the Federal Security Service (FSB) on Wednesday.

"We see that foreign intelligence services are seeking to bolster their efforts on the Russian front, doing everything they can to obtain access to political, economic, scientific and technological information," he said, adding that "just like before, and now probably even harder, (foreign intelligence services) are trying to influence events in our country."

Russian special services uncovered 129 staff members and 465 agents of foreign intelligence agencies in 2018, Vladimir Putin stressed.

"As many as 129 staff members and 465 agents of foreign intelligence agencies were unmasked as a result of special operations," he said.

Putin pointed out that foreign intelligence agencies sought to increase their influence on processes going on in Russia. "We can see that foreign intelligence services seek to step up their activities on the Russian track, they have been making every possible effort to get access to political, economic, scientific and technological information," the Russian president noted.

"That said, you must increase your efficiency. Just like before, and perhaps even more than ever, [foreign intelligence agencies] seek to influence the processes going on in our country."

Putin added that Russia’s counterintelligence agencies had demonstrated efficiency and proactivity in 2018.
