Went down the Tableau de l'Histoire Universelle map rabbit hole from a previous notable.

"Eugene Pick published the Tableau de L'Histoire Universelle in 1858 in two sheets, one for the Eastern Hemisphere (shown here) and one for the Western Hemisphere. The chart shows history from 4004 B.C. to 1856. Like many timelines in this style, it is based on the 1804 Strom der Zeiten (Stream of Time) by Friedrich Strass of Austria."

Interesting-looking sort of freeform timeline of world history, must have been a niche fad in the late 1800's, but does not appear to represent deep underground tunnels. Strikes me that this is what people drew when they needed, but didn't have, mindmapping or spreadsheet programs.
The Strass map it's based on:

The people who drew these things should be in the autist hall of fame.
