Log time lurker/first time poster.. Was looking into Q's "Do people follow the 'stars'?" Relating to DARPA's connection to FB.

https://www.darpa.mil/about-us/timeline/starnet-established - DARPA and key companies from the semiconductor and defense industries established the Semiconductor Technology Advanced Research Network, or STARnet. This effort, which lasted until 2017 when it was superseded by a similar program known as JUMP, supported large university communities to look beyond the current evolutionary directions in microelectronics research and development. This community of leading academics was supported by resources and expertise of DARPA and participating companies, including at least $40 million each year in basic research funding.

Don't know if there is anything here, but looking into some of the things they were working on lead me to this.

Goals

Technical goals proposed by Centers including

  • including reductions of 100 times in the power consumption of devices

  • 100 – 10,000 times lower energy consumption in logic switches

  • 10 – 100 times higher computational energy efficiency, scalability of technologies to sub-10 nanometer dimensions, development of novel computing architectures

  • highly energy-efficient information processing systems inspired in the nervous system.

The one that stood out to me was this last one having to do with the processing systems inspired by the nervous system? What are they doing here?

Does this relate to anything that are doing in Building 8?

"I’m excited to announce that we've started a new group at Facebook called Building 8 focused on building new hardware products to advance our mission of connecting the world.

This team will be led by Regina Dugan, who most recently led the Advanced Technology and Projects group at Google, and before that was the Director of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency - DARPA).

I'm excited to have Regina apply DARPA-style breakthrough development at the intersection of science and products to our mission. This method is characterized by aggressive, fixed timelines, extensive use of partnerships with universities, small and large businesses, and clear objectives for shipping products at scale.

We'll be investing hundreds of people and hundreds of millions of dollars into this effort over the next few years. I'm excited to see breakthroughs on our 10 year roadmap in augmented and virtual reality, artificial intelligence, connectivity and other important areas. "

Anything here?
