Walls don't stop anything but they slow a lot of things way way way down. When all you have is a vehicle barrier, you just need two vehicles and a walkie talkie.
A hole in a brick wall is obvious and will be plugged within a day. Laddering over a 30 ft steel barrier with pointy tops is a one MAN at a time operation and would take hours to get a substantial group over. If the section is patrolled every 2 hours, that's a no go.
The other thing about a real barrier, is you know that thing is strong enough to stop tanks from crossing it in conjunction with resistance from the air. Poking a hole in it and running a group of tanks through would create a funnel of death.
