Who painted the Denver Airport Murals?

The Denver Airport Murals were painted by artist Leo Tanguma. He began work on the murals in 1993 and they were completed for the airport opening in 1995. He was also assisted by a number of local artists and his daughter Leticia Tanguma.

Did you know?

The artist released a statement refuting the claims made by the conspiracy theorists and explaining his background, the meaning behind his work and the history of his development as an artist.

โ€œIโ€™m not part of any conspiracy whatsoever. I mean, itโ€™s weird to be saying that. In general, this is about humanity. What could they find bad about this

In 1993, Tanguma got a $100,000 commission for DIA. Initially, it was for one mural โ€” but as he started painting, he decided to do more. โ€œI wanted it to live up to how I felt about Denver, for the opportunity,โ€ he says. He insists that he was given no guidelines for what to paint, and it took him three years to finish the work. โ€œI tried to paint according to my conscience. Because I told the committee I tried not to paint just for decoration. It has to have a meaning.โ€

Leo Tanguma is the man behind the two murals in the โ€œGreat Hallโ€ terminal at DIA, โ€œThe Children of the World Dream of Peaceโ€ and โ€œIn Peace and Harmony with Nature.โ€ Both the murals are split into two large panels, one set at 12ft x15ft, the other set at 12ft x 28ft, that span entire walls near the baggage claims, creating quite a jarring experience for traveler who donโ€™t expect things like dead children and genocidal military men to be featured in a public airport.

He earned the commission for the murals at DIA in the early 90s while the airport was being built and was helped by art students and people from the community.

Itโ€™s hard to think of a work of contemporary art that has been more analysed and cited by the the various global conspiracy theory movements than the DIA murals. The 9-11 Truth thinkers, anti-mason folk, UFO hunters, 2012 followers, New Age spiritualists, ultra-conservative Christians, Chemtrail people, anarchists, anti-government ideologues, all see the DIA paintings as something of an oracle that must be interpreted to understand future events.
