Some Protestants were Anglo descent. But some prods were Catholics who converted (often in name only, and going to the minimum one communion service a month) to keep businesses / family land together despite the penal laws, which outlawed Catholics holding certain businesses, and also meant land had to be subdivided / split among all sons. Or converted to get fed during the famine.
