S. Korea, US sign deal on Seoul paying more for US military

South Korea and the United States on Friday signed a deal that would increase Seoul’s financial contribution for the deployment of U.S. troops in the Asian country.

After rounds of failed negotiations, chief delegates from the two countries last month agreed on Seoul paying about 1.04 trillion won ($924 million) in 2019 for the U.S. military presence, up from about $830 million last year.

President Donald Trump earlier pressured Seoul to increase its share, triggering worries in South Korea that he might withdraw some of the 28,500 U.S. troops here if Seoul refused to accept his demand.

One ex-Korean president bailed, another still jailed

Lee walks, but successor Park remains behind bars, files no appeal in a show of defiance against judiciary

Former South Korean President Lee Myung-bak walked out of prison on Wednesday evening on conditional bail, but his successor in the presidential Blue House, fellow conservative Park Geun-hye, remained behind bars, serving a 33-year sentence.

The two have taken radically different approaches to their prison sentences.

Lee, who went from being a poverty-struck market porter to a Hyundai Construction executive and then mayor of Seoul before leading South Korea from 2008-2013, was sentenced to 15 years in jail on October 5, 2019, on corruption charges.

Iran's mullahs find themselves in further isolation

March 8, 2019 - The mullahs’ regime in Iran currently faces a level of political and economic isolation that is unprecedented in its four-decade history of deceit and corruption.

Panama recently announced that the Iranian regime is not allowed anymore to use its flags for Iranian oil tankers.

Mashreghnews website, close to Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, published a report on February 25 and wrote: “In cooperation with the U.S. and in support of its sanctions against Iran, the Panama Maritime Authority has denied the 60 ships related to Iran the right to raise Panama’s flag. The Authority has also removed Panama’s flags from these 60 Iranian ships’ registrations.”

Seatrade Maritime News reports: “After a meeting with authorities of the United States Treasury Department, the US Embassy, the Maritime Authority of Panama (AMP) the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Panamanian Association of Maritime Law, Panama decided to remove the Iranian vessels and notified Panamanian consuls around the world, not to receive any payment for taxes and fees from the vessels coming from or from companies of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Another aspect of the increasing isolation of the ruling theocracy in Tehran is a continuing decrease in its oil exports to even destinations like China.
