GOP congressman defends Nickelback in bizarre debate

By Lia Eustachewich March 8, 2019 | 4:35pm

Members of the House got a chuckle on Thursday as they debated one of the most lingering — and polarizing — issues facing the country: the popularity of Nickelback.

The oft-ridiculed Canadian rock band was invoked as Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Rep. Randy Davis (R.-Ill.) bickered over how to count prison inmates on the US consensus.

Pocan offered an amendment that would end what’s known as “prison gerrymandering,” in which the incarcerated are counted in the census as residents of prisons and not their most recent address before imprisonment.

Noting the extremely low number of people who wanted to keep the practice in place, Pocan said it’s “probably about the percent of people who think Nickelback is their favorite band in this country. It’s pretty low.”

Pocan tried to continue his argument but was interrupted by Davis.

“Nickelback’s your favorite band? I apologize for the gentleman!” Pocan quipped.

Davis followed up, “Why would you criticize one of the greatest bands of the ‘90s?”

“Wow. Alright! One more reason why there’s a difference between Democrats and Republicans, clearly,” Pocan joked.

It’s unclear if Davis was being sarcastic.
