Interesting note on JFK Jr Plane crash, I am sure its probably already been covered here.

Coast Guard chased down a False emergency beacon signal off the Coast of Long Island some 200 miles from the actual wreck site off Cape Cod causing what I am sure hours delay and spread out rescue team resources in finding actual wreck site.

No other planes had issues these nights and except for 1 news report and this one article that story went away.

Last radar contact was "17" miles from Martha"s Vineyard the search area started near Long Island where the false emergency beacon signal was located.

"For that reason, the initial search covered a broad swath of the Eastern Seaboard, from Long Island to Cape Cod. About 3:30 A.M. yesterday, the Coast Guard received a signal from an emergency beacon off Long Island, but it proved to be unrelated to the Kennedy airplane. Later yesterday morning, two boaters found some debris floating off the Connecticut coast. That, too, was a false alert."

One could look at this as someone assuring that no survivors would be found once true location was located.
