Saudis agree to cooperate on G20 summit

Jiji Press TOKYO (Jiji Press) โ€” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman agreed Thursday to work closely together for the success of the Group of 20 summits this year and in 2020.

Leaders of the 20 advanced and emerging economies will meet in Osaka in June this year. Next yearโ€™s G-20 summit is slated to take place in Saudi Arabia.

In their talks by phone, Abe told the Saudi crown prince that Japan traditionally has a friendly relationship with Saudi Arabia and that he supports the Middle East countryโ€™s pro-reform stance.

Abe also said his government intends to promote the Saudi-Japan Vision 2030, under which Japan helps Saudi Arabia reduce its heavy dependence on oil exports for revenue.

The crown prince said Saudi Arabia aims to further strengthen the bilateral relationship as there is room for more cooperation in a wide range of fields.

According to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, the 15-minute phone talks did not cover the killing in October last year of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Saudi crown prince is suspected of having been involved in the murder.
