Emergency landing forced at Newark Airport

Hydraulic problems forced a Tokyo-bound plane to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport today, but not before it dumped gallons of fuel on a Somerville neighborhood.

"From our firehouse we could see the plane circling around," said Myles Wynn. "Then we saw it disappear. It stopped dumping fuel."

An FAA spokeswoman said the Boeing 777 with 291 passengers on board had hydraulic problems, but didn't provide any further details.

There were no reported injuries.

Continental Flight 9 landed without incident at 12:15 p.m., about an hour after it left Newark, said Steve Coleman, aspokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The FAA spokeswoman said the pilots spent about an hour burning off and dumpingfuel before landing, a standard practice that makes the airplanelighter.

The jet was taken out of service and will be inspected to determine whatcaused the problem, said Julie King, a Continental spokeswoman.
