I'm not using acrobat for more than 10 yrs now. By now, there's quite a many programs reading PDFs (flawlessly), especially if you're doing linux.
So, like I said, start w/ Microsoft.
I'm on linux, so doesn't apply to you, but for readers there's
Foxit, Nitro, Slim PDF, Sumatra, PDF-XChange
Don't know any of them myself, but many/most of them are opensource, which has some implications for security/backdoors.
