Russia, Syria say children cannot survive in Rukban refugee camp

"The situation in the camp remains disastrous, its residents have to survive in the most difficult conditions, facing militant violence on a daily basis. Children are the ones who suffer the most. Given the lack of food and medical care, as well as dire sanitary condition and the spread of infectious diseases, nursing babies have little chance to survive. According to the family members of people living in the camp, most of those who die in Rukban every day are children under the age of two," the statement reads. According to Russian and Syrian representatives, Syrian nationals have been held in the camp for 1,773 days and while the United States demands Damascus create ideal conditions for temporary displaced persons, it may happen so that soon there will be no one to rescue.

Greenblatt at UNSC defends Israel’s decision to deduct terrorist payments

Afterward, Greenblatt tweeted what appeared to be his message to the 15-member Security Council.

What country in the world would tolerate a reward system that compensates terrorists for their crimes, US envoy Jason Greenblatt asked on Friday, after defending Israel's decision to deduct from the taxes it transfers every month to the Palestinian Authority the amount of money the PA pays to terrorists and their families each month.

Greenblatt, the US Special representative for International Negotiations, defended Israel at a UN Security Council closed-door debate initiated by Kuwait and Indonesia on Israel's decision.

Afterward, Greenblatt tweeted what appeared to be his message to the 15-member Security Council.

“If your citizens were being routinely attacked by terrorists, which of you would tolerate a reward system that compensated the attackers for their crimes?” he tweeted. “How can we possibly censure Israel for taking the same stance?”

Last month the security cabinet decided to deduct more than half a billion shekels it collects in tariffs it transfers to the PA, equal to the amount of money the PA paid in 2018 to terrorists imprisoned in Israeli jails, their families, and to security prisoners who have been released.

The Palestinian Authority's “institutionalization of support for terrorism is unacceptable and must be called out, unequivocally by all of us,” Greenblatt posted on his Twitter account, apparently reflecting what he told the Security Council. “The time has come for everyone to stop looking the other way.”

Greenblatt wrote that the issue “is about the fundamental moral and ethical point that terrorist violence should not be rewarded with compensation – plain and simple.”

Addressing PA Authority Mahmoud Abbas' decision not to accept any of the tax money if Israel deduct anything from the taxes it will transfer, Greenblatt wrote, “The Palestinian Authority is refusing to accept over $150 million in revenue to protest the fact that $11 million is being withheld, only to make a political point. Does that sound like a governing authority that is concerned with the welfare of its people?”

Despite evidence, Jussie Smollett's lawyer claims the actor is victim of 'media gangbang'

'Unprecedented proportions…'

Hours after it was announced a grand jury indicted actor Jussie Smollett on 16 felony charges for filing two false police reports related to his alleged hate crime hoax, the actor's defense attorney, Mark Geragos, claimed his client is the victim of a "media gangbang."

Geragos, speaking with CNN's Anderson Cooper, emphasized the unprecedented nature of Friday's announcement, condemning the fact that Smollett has been found guilty in the court of public opinion.

"What is happening here is, frankly, a media gangbang of this guy of unprecedented proportions," Geragos claimed. "That's the reason I got into this. I've never seen a media pendulum swing more quickly and more viciously and rob somebody of their presumption of innocence like this case has. It's startling the way people assume he's guilty."

Geragos also took issue with the indictment itself, which included one charge of disorderly conduct for each of Smollett's eight alleged lies to two separate police officers.

"I defy anybody to find any indictment anywhere where somebody has brought 16 counts for being a victim of a hate crime," Geragos said.

For his part, Cooper did not buy much of what Geragos was selling, noting how "weird" Smollett's story is — if true at all.

In a separate statement after Cook County announced the indictment, Geragos called the charges "overkill."

"This redundant and vindictive indictment is nothing more than a desperate attempt to make headlines in order to distract from the internal investigation launched to investigate the outrageous leaking of false information by the Chicago Police Department and the shameless and illegal invasion of Jussie's privacy in tampering with his medical records. Jussie adamantly maintains his innocence even if law enforcement has robbed him of that presumption," he said, according to TMZ.
