On 9/11, by John Perry Barlow

In any case, this is what I said then (09/11/2001)

This morning’s events are roughly equivalent to the Reichstag fire

that provided the social opportunity for the Nazi take-over of

Germany.

I am not suggesting that, like the Nazis, the authoritarian forces

in America actually had a direct role in perpetrating this

mind-blistering tragedy. (Though their indirect role deserves a much

longer discussion.)

Nevertheless, nothing could serve those who believe that American

“safety” is more important than American liberty better than

something like this. Control freaks will dine on this day for the

rest of our lives.

Within a few hours, we will see beginning the most vigorous efforts

to end what remains of freedom in America. Those of who are willing

to sacrifice a little – largely illusory – safety in order to

maintain our faith in the original ideals of America will have to

fight for those ideals just as vigorously.

I beg you to begin NOW to do whatever you can – whether writing your

public officials, joining the ACLU or EFF, taking to the streets, or

living visibly free and fearless lives – to prevent the spasm of

control mania from destroying the dreams that far more have died for

over the last two hundred twenty five years than died this morning.

Don’t let the terrorists or (their natural allies) the fascists win.

Remember that the goal of terrorism is to create increasingly

paralytic totalitarianism in the government it attacks. Don’t give

them the satisfaction.

Fear nothing. Live free.

And, please, let us try to forgive those who have committed these

appalling crimes. If we hate them, we will become them.

May God – or Whatever you want to call It – bless us all. We’ll need it.

Courage,

John Perry

This Guy

big piece to the puzzle me thinks

Career

Most of Morell's early work in the agency was devoted to Asian projects.[5] Later in his career, he managed the staff that produced the President's Daily Brief and he was the Executive Assistant to DCI George Tenet. Morell was also Bush's briefer during the September 11, 2001, attacks, and, when asked by Bush who was responsible, Morell said "I would bet my children's future that the trail would lead to the doorstep of Osama bin Ladin and al Qa'ida". Later, as deputy director, Morell would be a trusted advisor to President Barack Obama in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden on May 2, 2011.[5][6] Before his 2010 nomination as Deputy Director, he served as Director for Intelligence, a position he had held since 2008. He served as the CIA's Associate Deputy Director from 2006 to 2008.[3]

In May 2010, Morell was sworn in as the deputy director of the CIA, succeeding Stephen Kappes.[7] From July 1, 2011, to September 6, 2011, he served his first stint as acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, replacing Leon Panetta who was named as Secretary of Defense.[8] On November 9, 2012, Morell once again became acting director after the resignation of David Petraeus, following a sex scandal.[9] President Obama chose John Brennan as Director; he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by 63 to 34 vote on March 5, 2013.[10]

Morell announced his retirement from the CIA on June 12, 2013.[11] In November 2013, he joined Beacon Global Strategies as a Senior Counselor.[12]

In the wake of Edward Snowden's 2013 unlawful leak of documents on international espionage conducted by the National Security Agency, Morell was appointed as a member of President Obama's Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies. By the end of 2013, the group presented a report to the White House. Nearly all the Review Group's recommendations were accepted. Morell has been a regular critic of Snowden, saying that ISIS benefitted from Snowden's disclosures, adding that "Americans may well die at the hands of terrorists because of Edward Snowden's action".[13]

Meanwhile, in January 2014, Morell joined CBS News as an on-air contributor in intelligence and national security.[14]

Moar on Morell

Since November 2013, he has been a senior counselor to Beacon Global Strategies LLC.

Beacon Global Strategies LLC (BGS) is a Washington, DC-based strategic advisory firm founded by Jeremy Bash, Philippe Reines, and Andrew Shapiro in 2013.[1][2] According to the firm's website, Beacon Global Strategies specializes in matters of international policy, foreign affairs, national defense, cyber, intelligence, and homeland security.[3]

About BGS

A September 2013 article in Defense News, describes Beacon Global Strategies as unique for a Washington consulting firm because of its partners' intent to eventually return to government. The article noted that "Part of the confidence in future public service may stem from a combination of significant titles and relative youth, paired with the fact that most of the founders of the firm have ties to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who may be a presidential favorite heading into the 2016 election if she decides to run."[1]

A September 2013 Washington Post profile of Beacon Global Strategies highlighted the firm's bipartisan make up: "'We want to build bipartisan support for solutions to complex national security problems,' Bash said, noting that cooperation between Democrats and Republicans on these issues 'has been lacking in recent years.'"[4]
