RELATIONS between Rome and Paris have taken another hit with Italy’s president forced to issue a public appeal for calm. Sergio Mattarella warned both countries to work together to end the standoff between the two sides, sparked by tensions between French president Emmanuel Macron and Italian deputy prime ministers Luigi Di Maio and Matteo Salvini.
Relations are now so low one Italian political commentator said it was if “the Alps just got taller”.
