Germany Is Paralyzed by an Impossible Choice
For decades, the country watched the money roll in. Now the global trade order is unraveling.
The global order that underpins German prosperity is unraveling. And Angela Merkel doesn’t know what to do about it.
President Donald Trump’s America First policy is forcing Germany to make an impossible choice between the U.S. and China—pitting the force behind the country’s modern economic success against the key to its future growth.
The result is political paralysis at a time when Germany’s allies are looking for political leadership.

FREEPORT (WREX) — About 120 soldiers from the 333rd Military Police Company based out of Freeport will deploy to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba this summer.
The soldiers being deployed in support of Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GMTO).
While deployed to Guantanamo Bay, the 333rd will act as guards at the detention facility, according to Maj. Jacob Beard of Roscoe.
“While most of the 333rd’s previous deployments have been for combat operations, the mission to Cuba is different in that the soldiers will be providing security,” Beard said. “To prepare for deployment, they have been undergoing localized training specific to the mission.”
Soldiers will provide safe control, custody and care to the 40 detainees still housed in the detention facility.

UN staff and humanitarian workers among victims of Ethiopian Airlines crash
Emergency services at the crash site of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday, March 10. The flight was bound for Nairobi, Kenya.
(CNN)The ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed shortly after takeoff on Sunday was packed with humanitarian workers and international experts, many of whom were bound for a major United Nations environmental summit in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.
Twenty-one UN staff members were among the 157 people killed after Flight ET302 plummeted into a field outside Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UN officials said on Monday, revising down a death toll provided to CNN earlier in the day.
The airline said passengers from at least 35 countries were on the flight, often referred to as a "UN shuttle" for ferrying staff between Addis Ababa, home of the African Union headquarters, and Nairobi, the UN's headquarters in Africa.
But the plane was particularly full due to the UN Environment Assembly, which began on Monday. The summit, described as the world's highest-level decision-making body on the environment, brings together member states to tackle environmental challenges.

Plans for Wheelchair-Accessible Cells at Gitmo Paint 'Chilling Picture' of Detainees Held Without Trial For Rest of Their Lives
Newly-revealed plans for expanding the Guantanamo Bay prison confirm that the future of the facility focuses on keeping detainees there well into old age—and likely for the rest of their lives.
A decade after President Barack Obama signed an executive order calling for Guantanamo Bay to be shuttered, prison officials are seeking contractors to build a wheelchair-accessible 5,000-square foot compound at the detention center, according to reports by the Middle East Eye andthe Miami Herald.
Human rights advocates on Thursday decried the move.
"Building wheelchair accessible prison cells at Guantanamo paints a deeply chilling picture," said Maya Foa, director of the British human rights organization Reprieve. "President Trump appears to be planning to detain men—the vast majority of whom have never been charged with a crime or faced a trial—until they die."

Algeria’s Bouteflika Standing Aside Might Not End Protests
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-12/bouteflika-standing-aside-might-not-end-algeria-s-protests
If Algeria’s ageing rulers hope sidelining Abdelaziz Bouteflika will buy them time to regroup, they may be disappointed. Young protesters have become bolder since their demonstrations began two weeks ago. Some now want the entire old guard to step aside.
In an letter released on Monday evening, Bouteflika postponed next month’s election and said he would no longer seek a fifth term, bowing to 18 days of demonstrations that had threatened to tear the OPEC member apart.
The 82-year-old leader, who returned to Algiers on Sunday following medical treatment in Geneva, said presidential elections would be held after a national conference to agree the contours of the next political era. He also promised that a new constitution would be drafted before year-end.
