GOP senators introduce bill to rein in president's emergency powers

More than a dozen Republican senators introduced legislation on Tuesday that would make it easier for Congress to terminate future national emergency declarations, days before the chamber will vote on President Trump's.

The legislation, spearheaded by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), would require that Congress pass a resolution extending an emergency declaration after 30 days for it to continue, otherwise it would be terminated.

McConnell opens door to changing president's emergency powers

McConnell signaled on Tuesday that he is open to changing the president's national emergency powers as support grows within the GOP caucus for amending the National Emergencies Act.

"We're looking at some ways to revisit the law. There's a lot of discomfort with the law. … Was it too broad back in the '70s when it was passed? So yeah, we're discussing altering that," McConnell told reporters during a weekly press conference.

Dems introduce bill requiring disclosure of guest logs from White House, Trump properties

Democrats in the House and Senate on Tuesday introduced a bill mandating the publication of visitor logs at the White House and other personal properties where President Trump conducts business.

Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.) and Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.), co-founder and co-chair of the Congressional Transparency Caucus, introduced the Making Access Records Available to Lead American Government Openness (MAR-A-LAGO) Act, a nod to Trump's private Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. The legislation was first introduced in the previous congressional term.

Good Riddance to May’s Withdrawal Agreement – a Turd Rolled in Glitter

Brexiteer Boris Johnson once famously described Theresa May’s first Withdrawal Agreement as a “polished turd”

The new one, you could say, was the same turd rolled in glitter.

Given that everyone, but everyone, knew exactly what was lurking beneath that twinkling exterior, it’s a wonder that it yet managed to garner as many 242 votes (40 more than last time).

Why did they do so?

Fear, mainly. They had been persuaded by the argument that Theresa May’s BRINO deal was the closest to Brexit they were ever going to get and that if they rejected it, it’s only going to suffer death by a thousand cuts administered by Remain-dominated parliament.

Senators Propose Bill to Stop Big Tech Companies’ ‘Spying on Children'

Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) have proposed a bill which would ban targeted advertising by Big Tech to young children. The goal is an “eraser button” to remove data about children from social media platforms and other Big Tech sites.

According to the Verge, Hawley and Markey want to amend the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) “in order to extend privacy protections to children up to age 15.”

“COPPA already prohibits companies like Facebook and Google from collecting personal data and location information from anyone under the age of 13 without explicit parental consent, but the senators’ new bill amending the law would extend protections to children up to age 15,” the Verge explained, adding, “However, if approved, platforms would only be able to collect the data of children aged 13 to 15 with their own, personal consent and not that of their parents.”
