I didn't know Manafort offered to work for free for Trump's campaign. And that Manafort sought Trump out and offered to work for free (so was Manafort in UK the same time as FBI?)

"The fact that Manafort, a hired-gun operative, was willing to work for free ought to have raised alarms. It’s also hard to imagine that Trump didn’t know about Manafort’s work for Yanukovych, for example. And once the campaign knew, it could easily have checked and discovered that Manafort (and Gates) had not disclosed the work under the Foreign Agent Registration Act. He should also have been aware of Manafort’s long ties to the Kremlin, especially through Oleg Deripaska."

"Paul Manafort, the former campaign manager of President Trump's insurgent election bid, used a series of letters and memos, as well as connections with the real estate mogul's friends and family, to work his way into the ranks of Trump's campaign, The New York Times reported Saturday."

Was one of these friends Manafort used to get Trump's attention Roger Stone?

It was Roger Stone who recommended to Trump to bring Manafort aboard.

"Manafort had experience in floor fights, dating to a 1976 battle between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, and besides, he came recommended by his former business partner Roger Stone, an occasional adviser to Trump."
