It's the Grand Solar Minimum happening now on a 400 year solar cycle. It's sort of a mini ice age but there are many cycles happening within cycles such that the full impact of this GSM might be somewhat unpredictable. But given the early warning signals this GSM might be in line with a deeper mini ice age on more of a 4,000 year cycle.

The abnormally high winds associated with extreme lows are multi-factorial. Suffice to say that the Earth's magnetic field weakens as the Sun's magnetic field also weakens. As Earth's magnetic field weakens it causes the high altitude jet streams to become unlocked from their usual paths and to stray widely. This is the reason why we see these abnormal arctic blasts pushing down into the Plains and looking more like a hurricane than a typical March storm.
