If you're going to speculate short, wait till 2-3 weeks before earnings. Lots of manipulation in the markets.

 

Remember cyclic: Fundamentals Technicals > Sentiment > Fundamentals > etc. Meaning stocks my be worth more or less then there fundamental (think bottom-line, book value) due to inflows and outflows (technicals). And if enough people pill in either direction (sentiment) the value can get further distorted. Eventually it all comes back to fundementals.

 

Also consider puts, they have capped downside risk, short selling common stock has unlimited downside risk (theoretically). Though they will, generally, cost more as you approach/near earnings, as the implied volatility of the option goes up.
