There really needs to be a discussion on how Common Core has affected test taking. Tests are significantly harder for no damn good reason (they are normed higher and students therefore have a higher fail rate). Same goes for GED tests; much lower pass rates for interior tests (they're not just harder, they're weirder–like Common Core math). To try to address CollegeGate without looking at the bigger picture is going to lead to distorted results, IMO. (Did a LOT of digging on education at both college and K-12 levels several years ago, modern education is a nightmare in too many ways to count.)

You are so right!

I was offered a teaching job at community college and found that, in the course description, everything had to be behaviorally stated (you can't say "student will learn such and such in XYZ class" , the goal has to be stated as an observable behavior. Shades of BF Skinner! That was the beginning of my journey down the rabbit hole.

Found that, yes, education has become just what Skinner wanted 70 years ago, from cradle thru university. Mastery learning Outcome based education > Common Core. And wicked to the core.

It's awful, but it's intentional. That's what Charlotte Iserbyt wrote a while back now, and it's still true: The Deliberate Dumbing Down of America. First edition can be downloaded for free (below). But actually, I got the paperback and just used the online version to do searches. It's a huge book but has everything through the early 2000s on the subversion of education in this country.

Homeschooling is wonderful for those who can manage it and have the temperament to teach

We took a somewhat different route for my grandkids, strategically moving them around, so they got a solid grounding in a Christian school before going to public high school (they wanted the experience). But the older one is blown away by how low the standards are. (It's weird–the standardized tests are harder but the actual learning is not much.)

So much to do to save our kids. So many different things need doing. Glad we are all here, and motivated to change things.

It was already happening in the 1930s, when they replace phonics for reading with "Look Say." I was fine with Look Say, but for most dyslexics, it's a disaster.

I had not heard this question was answered, but miss a few breads and who knows? The first post didn't get noticed much. Happens a lot during the day, so fast. Today, there were at least 3 breads with both bakers and baker assists working (I did two, because baker was phone-fagging). Wow, it makes a difference. About 3x the notables. I now realize that when my posts are "ignored" during day shifts, that's not what's happening. Things just go too fast. It actually seems better to split the tasks when it works out.

Many people do not understand what is going on now. It took me a lot of digging to figure it out. Saw things were really screwed up, but why? Took months to really pin it down, because the Powers That Be do a very good job hiding it. God bless you for your caring, and efforts to do right by your family. We will make a difference for the next generation with what we do here.
