Xaxis of Evil: Don't Worry, WPP's New Spying Database Will be "Anonymous"

BY JIM EDWARDS

UPDATED ON: JUNE 27, 2011 / 4:59 PM / MONEYWATCH

WPP's (WPPGY) new Xaxis unit, which contains what it claims is the world's largest database of unique individual profiles – including demographic, financial, purchase and geographic histories – is based on an impossible contradiction. The world's largest ad agency network told the WSJ that the data within it would be "anonymous" but the purpose of the data is to serve up personalized ads on any electronic device, including (eventually) your TV set.

Report Finds WPP's Xaxis Unit's Global Revenues Increased Nearly 20% in 2015 by Tobi Elkin , Staff Writer @tobielkin, May 3, 2016

Ad Age’s Agency Report 2016 has some interesting nuggets, and some of them pertain to programmatic media.

For example, the report found that holding company WPP has the most wide-ranging relationship with Google. WPP (including Essence, a digital agency acquired by WPP) in 2015 was found to have increased Google worldwide spending on behalf of clients by 25% to $4 billion. In fact, WPP expects its business with Google to exceed $5 billion in 2016. And last year, WPP injected $1 billion into advertising on Facebook, up from $650 million in 2014. That’s a lot of dough.

This proves once again that Facebook and Google are the 800-lb. gorillas of digital advertising, where most of the digital dollars available are spent.

One disappointing fact: Ad Age's rankings of media agencies excluded programmatic media buying such as data from WPP's Xaxis and Omnicom's Accuen programmatic units, where revenue includes billings for media bought and resold to clients. The report noted that Xaxis’ worldwide revenues increased about 20% to around $930 million in 2015 from $775 million in 2014.

WPP Agency Takes Funding From CIA Investment Unit

BY JIM EDWARDS

UPDATED ON: OCTOBER 21, 2009 / 3:50 PM / MONEYWATCH

WPP's Visible Technologies unit has taken investment funding from In-Q-Tel, the investment fund of the CIA. Visible Technologies is developing tools that can scan social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook, and scour meaningful data from them. According to Wired:

It's part of a larger movement within the spy services to get better at using "open source intelligence" – information that's publicly available, but often hidden in the flood of TV shows, newspaper articles, blog posts, online videos and radio reports generated every day.

It's the second time WPP has gotten into bed financially with the CIA. In January, WPP funded Omniture to the tune of $25 million. Omniture's Visual Sciences unit has also taken In-Q-Tel money. Wired, again:

In-Q-Tel says it wants Visible to keep track of foreign social media, and give spooks "early-warning detection on how issues are playing internationally," spokesperson Donald Tighe tells [Wired's] Danger Room.

So, hello there, CIA agents! Please bookmark this blog and come back soon.

Google, WPP, Gannett Shares Shrug Off Apple Privacy Breach Study

By David Zielenziger @DavidZie

02/17/12 AT 2:21 PM

Shares of Google appeared to brush off reports a Stanford University study had found it had compromised the privacy of Apple iPhone customers.

Google closed at $604.64, down $1.88, an insignificant drop at that level. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company, No. 1 in search, didn't make any formal announcement but a spokesman told Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal it had stopped the spying.

The Journal ran a front-page story Friday citing the Stanford study, which determined Apple's Safari browser had been tricked by Google to accept temporary tracking cookies to monitor customer behavior.

The research is the work of Stanford researcher Jonathan Mayer and was confirmed by a researcher hired by News Corp., the Murdoch vehicle which owns the newspaper.

Google disabled the Web code after the Journal notified it.

Google wasn't the only offender, the study showed. Others included Gannett's PointRoll service, WPP's Media Innovation Group and Vibrant Media.
