But they're not extinct. They've been closely held by every nation that had the capability. What was driven to extinction was our immunity/resistance to said disease's and now we're vulnerable as hell to a mass extinction event by any number of natural or engineered pathogens.
The cosmic joke will be when some bastards re-release smallpox and everyone over 65 survives because they still have immunity.
