The Intercept shuts Snowden archive amid layoffs & outrage

First Look Media, the parent company of the Intercept, announced it will shut access to the archive of documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden to cut costs as it plans to layoff 4 percent of staff.

The news was met with outrage from high ranking staff member and filmmaker Laura Poitras, who went to Hong Kong to meet Snowden in 2013, just before the first revelations from his trove of National Security Agency documents were published.

She said she was “sickened” by the decision to “eliminate the research team, which has been the beating heart of the newsroom since First Look Media was founded,” and slammed the company for making the decision without consulting her or other board members.

Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and Jeremy Scahill joined First Look Media at its founding, launching the Intercept in 2014 as a place to“aggressively report” on the Snowden documents. The company employed a research team to work on the huge trove of documents provided by Snowden.

Twelve Senate Republicans Voted for Ending Trump’s National Emergency

Twelve Senate Republicans voted in favor of a Democrat resolution to end President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration.

The Senate passed a resolution on Thursday to end the president’s national emergency resolution. The bill passed through the Senate as well as the House; however, both times the resolution did not receive enough votes to override a presidential veto.

President Trump has already threatened to veto the legislation.

Although most Senate Republicans voted with the president and affirmed both his constitutional authority and his initiative to secure America’s southern border through a national emergency declaration, twelve Republicans decided to join Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to end the national emergency.

The twelve Senate Republicans who voted with Democrats to end the national emergency include:

Rand Paul (R-KY)

Mike Lee (R-UT)

Susan Collins (R-ME)

Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

Lamar Alexander (R-TN)

Mitt Romney (R-UT)

Jerry Moran (R-KS)

Pat Toomey (R-PA)

Rob Portman (R-OH)

Roger Wicker (R-MS)

Marco Rubio (R-FL)

Roy Blunt (R-MO)

Many of these Republicans have cited Congress’s authority under the Constitution as the only branch to appropriate money. However, Congress passed the National Emergencies Act of 1976, which allows the president to declare a national emergency and reappropriate money to further a national security interest, such as securing the southern border.

Sen. Paul said in a press release Thursday, “I stand with President Trump on the need for a border wall and stronger border security, but the Constitution clearly states that money cannot be spent unless Congress has passed a law to do so.”

Many Republican senators also said they oppose any form of executive overreach, which includes former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) illegal alien amnesty.

However, one federal district judge ruled in August 2018 that DACA was illegal, whereas many lawyers have argued that Trump has the authority under the National Emergencies Act of 1976 to reappropriate money to build the wall.

Further, several attorneys general, including Texas attorney general Ken Paxton, Indiana attorney general Curtis Hill, and Lousiana attorney general Jeff Landry, wrote an op-ed Thursday affirming Trump’s constitutional authority to declare a national emergency to build the wall.

Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), a constitutional lawyer who voted in favor of keeping the national emergency, came out last week to affirm Trump’s constitutional authority to declare a national emergency.

Syrian Opposition Summit To Legitimize Al-Qaeda Failed Before Start

A planned meeting for the Syrian opposition in the Turkish city of Antioch was cancelled due to “security reasons,” the al-Araby al-Jadeed outlet reported on March 14, citing opposition officials who organized the meeting.

Many opposition bodies were invited to the extensive meeting, including the National Syrian Army (NSA), the National Front for Liberation (NFL), the Syrian Higher Negotiation Committee (HNC), the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, The opposition’s delegation to the Astana talks, the Syrian Interim Government and the Syrian Islamic Council (SIC).

The officials didn’t clarify the nature of the “security reasons” which led to the cancellation of the meeting. However, other sources told al-Arabi al-Jadeed that the meeting was canceled because the Turkish-backed National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces and the Syrian Interim Government had refused to attend it.

Previously, the organizers claimed that a series of high-level decisions and measures will be announced during the meeting. Syrian opposition activists revealed that one of these decision would be the merge of the Syrian Interim Government with the Salvation Government, which is run by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

HTS, commonly known as the al-Nusra Front, was the main branch of al-Qaeda in Syria up until 2017. The plan to merge its government with the opposition was seen as a clear attempt to legitimize al-Qaeda presence in Syria.

Two months ago, a source in the HNC confirmed to Sputnik news agency that Turkey is working to transform HTS into a political party. The source said that the Turkish-backed party will attempt to mimic to Lebanese Hezbollah.

The failure of the meeting is a blow to Turkey’s plans and HTS leader Abu Mohammad al-Julani personally. However, other similar attempts may be undertaken in the next few months. Turkey appears to be in rush to execute its plans for northern Syria before the Syrian-Iranian-Russian alliance would make a final decision to implement a military option in Idlib.
