Report: Facebook’s Data Deals Under Criminal Investigation

New York Times recently reported that federal prosecutors are conducting a criminal investigation into social media giant Facebook’s data deals with other major tech firms. A grand jury in New York has reportedly subpoenaed records from two prominent smartphone developers, both of which had entered into data sharing partnerships with Facebook which gave them access to the personal details of hundreds of millions of Facebook users.

More than 150 companies entered a similar deal with Facebook, including Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, and Sony. These deals gave the companies access to users’ friends, contact information and other data, often without consent. Most of these partnerships have been phased out by Facebook over the past two years.

Someone say, "RICO"?

Tulsi Gabbard Attacks Facebook over Censorship, Defends Free Speech for ‘All Americans’

“We must be willing to fight for the right of all Americans to express their views, even when we disagree with them,” said Rep. Gabbard. “We must encourage unfettered discussion of public issues and stand united to stop Facebook and others from attempting to censor/stifle/influence public debate.”

Senators introduce bill to regulate facial recognition technology

Sens. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), members of the Senate Commerce Committee, introduced the first-of-its-kind legislation along with an endorsement from Microsoft and digital rights group the Center for Democracy and Technology.

"Consumers are increasingly concerned about how their data is being collected and used, including data collected through facial recognition technology," Blunt said in a statement. “That’s why we need guardrails to ensure that, as this technology continues to develop, it is implemented responsibly."

Facial recognition technology analyzes human faces for the purpose of identifying them. Amazon's facial recognition technology, Rekognition, in particular has come under fire for misidentifying people of color as criminals during research, and privacy advocates have long said facial recognition tech offers governments and companies excessive access to information about peoples' daily lives.

US announces more support for ‘heroic’ White Helmets in Syria

Trump administration is doubling down on backing the White Helmets, the self-proclaimed civil defense group with often controversial activity in militant-held areas of Syria, pledging a $5 million donation at a conference.

The contribution was announced by ambassador James Jeffrey, US special envoy to the anti-Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) coalition, at the third Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region, held in Brussels.

The $5 million will fund both the “vital, life-saving operations” by the White Helmets and the work of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM), a UN body created in late 2016 to investigate – but not prosecute – alleged atrocities in Syria after 2011.
