My neighbors have 2 kids from Russian Adoption. They adopted the kids in the early 2000s and they are about to graduate high school. The daughter is a really pretty phenomenal(all state in 2 sports) athlete. The son has some really severe developmental problems. The neighbors are good folks.

Melanin used in science/research is harvested from bacterial cultures. Its expensive(400/gram) not because its super costly to create, but because the demand for it is fairly low. This is very very common for research chemicals. If there was a compelling reason to produce melanin at an industrial scale, it would not be infinitely cheaper than trafficking and perfectly legal.
