Haiti, The 11 Baptists, Laura Silsby and The New Life Children's Refuge Case

The New Life Children’s Refuge case was a legal case about an incident which occurred in the chaotic aftermath of the January 12th 2010 Haiti earthquake.

On January 29, 2010, a group of ten American Baptist missionaries from Idaho attempted to cross the Haiti-Dominican Republic border with 33 Haitian children, most of whom were not orphans and had families. The group, known as the New Life Children’s Refuge, did not have proper authorization for transporting the children and were arrested on kidnapping charges.

The missionaries denied any wrongdoing and claimed that they were rescuing orphans and leading them to a Dominican hotel which was being transformed into an orphanage. Nine of the ten missionaries were later released but NLCR founder Laura Silsby remained incarcerated in Haiti. By the time she went to trial on May 13 the charges had been reduced to "arranging irregular travel" and the prosecution sought a 6-month prison term. On May 17, she was found guilty and sentenced to the time served in jail prior to the trial.

Bill Clinton was planning a charity trip to Latin America and needed a big plane.

For Frank Giustra, who had never met the former president, this was an opportunity. The Canadian mining magnate and onetime Hollywood studio owner stepped up to let the former president borrow his luxurious passenger jet. There was just one condition: Giustra would come along for the ride.

That 2005 trip was the start of an intense, mutually beneficial friendship — one that has helped propel the Clinton Foundation into a global giant and established Giustra’s reputation as an international philanthropist while helping him build connections in countries where his business was expanding.

Giustra has since committed more than $100 million to the work of the Clinton Foundation, becoming one of the largest individual donors to the family’s charities.

Clinton has also gained regular transportation, borrowing Giustra’s plane 26 times for foundation business since 2005, including 13 trips in which the two men traveled together. The numbers on Clinton’s use of the plane, never previously reported, were provided by a spokeswoman for Giustra.

On November 17, 2015, Frank Giustra went to Lesbos Greece to see the refugee crisis for himself. Lesbos is 10 km off the coast of Turkey and a focal point in the refugee and migrant crisis. The UN High Commission for Refugees had recorded the arrival of approximately 434,000 people on the shores of Lesbos since the start of the year.

According to the UN, 61 percent of the refugees and migrants arriving in Greece are Syrians fleeing the violence of the nearly five-year civil war. The EU predicts 3 million asylum seekers by the end of 2016.

Mr. Giustra is working with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to build a reception centre for these refugees in Lesbos. Due to complete by mid-December, the facility will offer overnight shelter to 1,500 people, as well as provide dry clothes, food, and transportation to the refugee camps — which are located on the other side of the island. Please join Mr. Giustra and the IRC with this on-going humanitarian and fundraising effort.
