Not a huWhite Superioritorist myself, but I think what happened, is, some pro-Trump folks were doing it (an an a-OK sign, innocently), and it was co-opted by alt-righters (read: controlled opposition) and then became a "white" thing. I could be wrong, but it just became a smear thing to take down POTUS on the public opinion battlefield.
