NZ killer entered Turkey in March. The standard tourist visa for Turkey is 90 days, and Turkey believes he got an “extended visa” (assume this means an extension added to the standard 90 days, but there could have been another type of extended visa). There was a huge terror attack at the Istanbul airport in June, followed by a coup attempt in July. Depending on what day he arrived in Turkey, he may have applied for an extension after the airport attack. Did he stay through the coup attempt? Why would anyone extend their visa under such extreme political conditions? Did he have some kind of business there? Having lived in Turkey, I would have felt very nervous there during conditions like that.
