$12 Billion Defamation Suit Hits Major Media Outlets

Failed Republican Senate candidate Don Blankenship filed a massive defamation lawsuit on Thursday against dozens of news outlets and media personalities for referring to him as a “felon” during his 2018 run in the West Virginia primary.

While Blankenship, the former CEO of Massey Energy, spent a year in federal prison after a misdemeanor conviction for conspiring to violate safety regulations prior to a deadly mining disaster in 2010, he was acquitted of all felony charges.

Blankenship — whose campaign rose to national prominence after he ran an ad dubbing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell “Cocaine Mitch” and called Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao‘s father a “wealthy Chinaperson” — is seeking over $12 billion in damages in the lawsuit filed in Mingo County, West Virginia Circuit Court.

“Fox News, CNN, MSNBC and the other defendants in this case, when they represent themselves as a news outlet or news source, the public’s reasonable expectation is that they are indeed a ‘credible’ news outlet,” Blankenship’s attorney Eric Early, a failed GOP candidate for California attorney general, said in a statement to Mediaite. “It’s beyond wrong when they lie about facts that are easily ‘google-ible.’ These news outlets are going to have to decide at some point whether they are actual news or entertainment channels.”

For “injuries Mr. Blankenship has suffered,” he is seeking “damages in an amount not less than $2 billion dollars,” the suit notes, before adding that he also “seeks substantial punitive damages in the amount of 10 billion dollars.”

“Some of the defendants in this case are massive media companies… and a large punitive damage award is necessary to adequately punish and/or deter these Defendants from repeating this conduct,” the document states.

The lengthy list of outlets targeted by Blankenship is nonpartisan. CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, the Associated Press, the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post are all listed alongside Breitbart News, the Washington Times, and the Washington Examiner‘s parent company Clarity Media.

Orbán speaks against the “EU empire”

Europe’s peoples should “see and understand that Europe will have no free life without its Christian culture”, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said during a state celebration of the anniversary of Hungary’s 1848 revolution in front of Budapest’s National Museum.

“Unless we protect our Christian culture we will lose Europe and Europe will no longer belong to Europeans,” Orban insisted. He added that Christianity was equally important for a free Hungary and warned that “all of us would lose our freedom in a liberal empire”. “Nobody can be free if they are subjects of an empire rather than children of a free nation”. “Europeans can only be happy if they can decide on their own fate and on the future of their nation”, Orban added. The ideal of freedom “is rooted in Christianity because all people and all nations are equal before God,” the prime minister said.

Orban welcomed Polish participants in the celebrations, and said that “without Poland Hungary would not be free and Europe could not have been re-united”. “When they attack Poland from Brussels, they attack the whole of central Europe, including us, Hungarians”. “Our message to the empire-builders seeking to extend their shadow over central Europe is that they will always need to consider Hungarian-Polish ties,” he said.

“Each year we renew our oath to God that we will insist on freedom and reject subordination; the nation’s common oath means that each Hungarian will stand by other Hungarians and all Hungarians will stand by Hungary,” Orban said.

Concerning Europe, the prime minister called for “strong nation states and new, strong leaders” who will “take aid over there rather than bring problems over here”. “We want a new beginning to stop Europe’s decline and put an end to the nightmare of a united states of Europe,” he said.

For Hungarians “freedom is not a goal but a way to reach our goals”, Orban said, and argued that “we want simple things, just like in 1848: a homeland of our own, good neighbours, an understanding spouse and loving family, and work, which is meaningful and fruitful,” Orban said. “For us freedom is not an abstract ideal but life itself; breathing, circulation and the throbbing of the heart,” he added.

“The years to come will prove that we, Hungarians, are not here just to suffer through life but to give it a meaning,” the prime minister said, concluding his speech by saying that “Hungary first, God above all, go Hungary, go Hungarians.”

Poland and Hungary are once again fighting together for a common future and “supporting justice, solidarity and equal rights as they did in 1848-49,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said. He noted that the two nations had been friends for over a thousand years and fought together for freedom on several occasions. “Now we are fighting for a better Hungary, a better Poland, a better Europe. For all who believe in a Europe of nations which will serve the common man rather than the elites,” he said.

Birmingham school to indefinitely suspend LGBT lessons for kids after parents’ anger

Following a massive outcry by parents, Parkfield Community School has announced it will be indefinitely suspending its LGBT rights curriculum until an agreement is reached with protesting families.

Under the schools ‘No Outsider’ program, students as young as four were being taught about same sex marriage and transgender lifestyle in an effort to fight discrimination at an early age. In spite of its name, the program alienated and incensed a large number of parents in the predominantly Muslim area who opposed it both on religious grounds, and due to the young age of the students involved.

While the school initially said the lessons would go on as planned after scheduled talks in Easter, weekly protests by the parents, including some 600 pupils being pulled from classes earlier in the month, seem to have changed the administration’s mind. Many parents also signed a petition opposing the program.

Parents, educators and the Excelsior Multi Academy Trust (the group that runs Parkfield) sat down for talks over the issue Wednesday ahead of schedule. The same day, the school administration announced the lessons would be suspended “until a resolution has been reached.”

“Nothing is more important than ensuring our children’s education continues uninterrupted,” the school said in a statement, adding that they hope the decision prevents parents from keeping their kids out of school. The board plans to continue discussions in the coming weeks in order to look for a compromise.

The lessons were heavily promoted by assistant head teacher Andrew Moffat, who is himself a gay man. The city council seemed to tacitly agree with his outlook, even warning the parents, mostly Muslim, that their protests were inciting “division and hate,” while Moffat claimed that he had received personal threats online.

The conflict over the school’s curriculum highlights a broader problem regarding cultural differences between England’s Muslim population and state regulations. Last month, Ofsted (the same regulatory body which cleared Parkfield of any wrongdoing Tuesday) accused an Islamic school in Birmingham of discriminating against girls by ordering them not to eat their lunches until boys finish theirs.

Don’t Regulate Google, Says Google-Funded National Review Editor

National Review editor-in-chief Rich Lowry wrote a searing attack on the “right-left pincer” attacking big tech for Politico. The piece fails to mention Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s recent acknowledgment that the National Review Institute, of which National Review is a wholly owned subsidiary, received money from his company.

Last month, the Google CEO confirmed that his company donated money to the National Review Institute, the nonprofit behind National Review (although he offered a confused explanation as to why Google’s transparency report failed to mention the donation, which took place in 2017, until recently).

Yet the National Review’s editor fails to mention the donation is his piece for Politico, bluntly titled “Don’t Break up Big Tech.”

In the piece, Lowry complains that Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren’s recent proposal to break up and regulate big tech did not receive the usual “knee-jerk Republican opposition.” Instead, writes Lowry, Warren attracted support from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), usually diametrically opposed to arch-progressive Warren, after Facebook took down ads in favor of her tech regulation proposals.

“First time I’ve ever retweeted [Elizabeth Warren]” said Cruz. “But she’s right — Big Tech has way too much power to silence Free Speech. They shouldn’t be censoring Warren, or anybody else. A serious threat to our democracy.”

To the editor-in-chief of the Google-funded National Review, this bipartisan consensus about the unaccountable power of big tech is a major problem.

“Tech is caught in a right-left pincer, made all the more powerful by the populist spirit afoot in both parties,” complained Lowry.

“Conservatives don’t like these companies because they are owned and operated by sanctimonious Silicon Valley liberals subject to the worst sort of groupthink. Progressives don’t like them because they are colossal profit-making enterprises.”

New Zealand Attacker Purchased All Firearms Legally

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Christchurch shooting suspect Brenton Tarrant had a license to own guns and obtained the five guns used in the Mosque attacks via that license.

This means the Tarrant was not only licensed, but passed criminal, mental, and health-related background checks.

Business Standard reports that Tarrant allegedly used “two semi-automatic rifles, two shotguns and a lever-action weapon.” Ardern suggested Tarrant’s acquisition of five such firearms indicates more gun control is needed.

She said, “The mere fact… that this individual had acquired a gun licence and acquired weapons of that range, then obviously I think people will be seeking change, and I’m committing to that.”

Ardern added, “While work is being done as to the chain of events that led to both the holding of this gun licence, and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now our gun laws will change.”

Ardern noted that Tarrant was not on any watchlist, that he had not drawn the government’s attention via “extremism” of any sort. Therefore, as with so many high profile attackers in the U.S., there was nothing to prevent him from passing background checks to acquire a gun license.

Background checks cannot stop a determined attacker because these checks look backward; they search for past crimes and problems. If the would-be attacker has criminal or terror-based intentions but lacks any criminal or terror-based history, gun control will never stop him. However, gun control will render his victims less able to defend themselves.

‘Finished’ – Theresa May’s Senior Aides Want Her to ‘Fall on Her Sword’, ‘Go with Dignity’

Senior aides to Prime Minister Theresa May believe she is “finished” and want her to “fall on her sword” now and set a date for her departure, in hopes this will allow her to “go with dignity”.

The calls follow a second heavy defeat for the Withdrawal Agreement which Mrs May negotiated with the European Union, which is deeply unpopular with Brexiteer Tories as well as Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), on which her minority government relies to achieve a parliamentary majority.

Rather than embark upon the clean, No Deal exit which is the legal default on March 29th in the absence of a deal, the Prime Minister is instead pushing for a third vote on her deal and an extension of the ongoing Article 50 negotiations with the EU and a delay to Brexit — something she had repeatedly promised she would not do.

With a majority of Tory MPs and DUP MPs voting against extending Article 50 in the House of Commons, the Prime Minister was forced to rely on the anti-Brexit, left-liberal opposition parties to pass a motion in favour of extending Article 50 — a situation likely to have contributed to a sense that she has “lost the trust of eurosceptics” among her aides.

Two of these aides, according to The Telegraph, want her to promise she will go by the end of the year, possibly using the Tory conference in October as her swansong, with one saying this is the “only way” she can hope persuade Brexiteers to back her deal in what is being described as “Meaningful Vote 3”.

“She needs to go with dignity, if she sets a date for her departure she can be remembered as the woman who delivered Brexit,” said one.

Support for Mrs May is at a similarly low ebb among Government ministers, with one Cabinet source telling The Telegraph that “there are only two ministers in the Cabinet who still support her. Everyone else has lost faith in her ability to lead.”

“If she refuses to go she faces the ignominy of being kicked out by her own MPs, and all for the sake of a few extra months clinging on to power,” added another party source.

The Prime Minister survived a vote of no confidence in her leadership of the Tories, in which a majority of Tory MPs not on the ministerial payroll called for her to go, with party rules opening her up to another challenge from December.

Yellow Vests: 15,000 Protesters, 100 Arrests, French PM Vows ‘Severe Punishment’

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe is vowing to “severely punish” the radicals responsible for rioting and setting fires around one of France’s richest neighbourhoods.

Philippe visited the Champs-Elysees on Saturday to show his support for riot police and firefighters struggling to get the unrest under control after it broke out amid yellow vest protests.

He estimated up to a few thousand troublemakers were responsible for Saturday’s “unacceptable” violence. Speaking to reporters, he praised firefighters who saved people trapped in a building set fire by protesters.

The situation remains tense Saturday along the Champs-Elysees after hours of violence and clashes with police firing tear gas and water cannon.

Armoured vehicles and about 15 police vans are lined up at one spot, facing down a mixture of yellow-vested protesters and black-clad people who seemed to be seeking opportunities to target police.

Paris police say more than 100 people have been arrested amid rioting in the French capital by yellow vest protesters.

The violence started minutes after yellow vest protesters started gathering Saturday morning around the Arc de Triomphe. They set life-threatening fires, smashed up luxury stores and clashed with police firing tear gas and water cannon.

Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on French television that an estimated 10,000 protesters were taking in protests in Paris and another 4,500 were demonstrating around France.

That was up from about 3,000 protesters in Paris last weekend.

But the yellow vest numbers paled beside the 30,000 people taking part in a climate march weaving through Paris at the same time, according to Castaner.

A bank has been set ablaze as French yellow vest protesters clash with police in Paris and firefighters had to rescue a mother and her child as the fire threatened to engulf their floor.

Florian Lointier, spokesman for Paris’ firefighters, told The Associated Press that 11 people sustained light injuries Saturday in the blaze, including two firefighters.

The fire in the bank, which was on the ground floor of a seven-story residential building near the Champs-Elysees Avenue, was later extinguished. Lointier said a mother and her child were saved from the flames on the second floor and other residents were safely evacuated.

Large plumes of smoke are rising above Paris’ landmark Champs-Elysees avenue as French yellow vest protesters set life-threatening fires, smashed up luxury stores and clashed with police in the 18th straight weekend of demonstrations against President Emmanuel Macron.

Police tried to contain the demonstrators Saturday with tear gas and water cannons. Fire trucks rushed and extinguished two burning newspaper kiosks that had been set ablaze. Several protesters posed for a photo in front of a kiosk’s charred remains.

The violence started when protesters threw smoke bombs and other objects at officers along the famed avenue in the French capital.

The violence comes after a two-month national debate that Macron organized to respond to protesters’ concerns about sinking living standards, high unemployment, stagnant wages and general income inequality.

CIA Blames Its Proxy For Its Raid On North Korea's Embassy In Spain

The CIA is the main suspect in the military style raid on the North Korean embassy in Madrid. It now launched a somewhat hapless effort to deflect from it. The Spanish report in which Spanish government sources accuse the CIA said:

At least two of the 10 assailants who broke into the embassy and interrogated diplomatic staff have been identified and have connections to the US intelligence agency. The CIA has denied any involvement but government sources say their response was “unconvincing.”

That the CIA is the main suspect in the assault was reported on Wednesday in the Spanish mainstream paper El Pais. The paper made the extra effort to publish an abbreviated English language version. It was widely picked up by other international outlets. Some of the assailants were Asian and spoke Korean language. They were probably from the South Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS), a subsidiary of the CIA know for its extremely hawkish politics. It often rigs elections in South Korea in support of hawkish conservatives candidates.

Attacking a foreign embassy in a third country is far out of bounce of international law and diplomatic decency. After the El Pais report something had to be done to direct the attention away from the CIA and to find some other culprit.

A story was thought up and pushed to the favorite CIA outlet, the Washington Post. It wasn't the CIA which did it, writes the Post's national security reporter, it was a CIA controlled 'regime change' organization.

A shadowy group trying to overthrow Kim Jong Un raided a North Korean embassy in broad daylight

In broad daylight, masked assailants infiltrated North Korea’s embassy in Madrid, restrained the staff with rope, stole computers and mobile phones, and fled the scene in two luxury vehicles.

The group behind the late February operation is known as Cheollima Civil Defense, a secretive dissident organization committed to overthrowing the Kim dynasty, people familiar with the planning and execution of the mission told The Washington Post.

People familiar with the incident say the group did not act in coordination with any governments. U.S. intelligence agencies would have been especially reluctant to do so given the sensitive timing and brazen nature of the mission. But the raid represents the most ambitious operation to date for an obscure organization that seeks to undermine the North Korean regime and encourage mass defections, they say.

The CIA agents, led by torture queen Gina Haspel, are snowflakes who would never break the law or cause some international outrage. It must have been some independent group:

“This group is the first known resistance movement against North Korea, which makes its activities very newsworthy,” said Sung-Yoon Lee, a North Korea expert at Tufts University.

31 Drug Labs Busted in Mexican Coastal State Since December 2018

The Mexican government announced that security operations led by La Secretaría de Marina or the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) located and dismantled 31 drug labs in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa since December 1, of 2018. The state of Sinaloa is the home base for the Sinaloa Cartel also known as the Sinaloa Federation. The cartel continues to have the largest operational footprint throughout the United States and worldwide despite the capture and imprisonment of notorious cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Military operations leading to the discovery of the drug-labs resulted from intelligence gathering and subsequent follow up in the field by operational elements, according to a statement released by military officials and provided to local media. Officials targeted the state of Sinaloa for the operation because it is known to be a home base for the production and distribution of synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The discovery of the labs resulted in the seizure of 15,500 kilograms (34,171 pounds) of methamphetamine in solid form, 41,200 liters of methamphetamine in liquid form, 49,300 liters of chemical precursors or waste material used to produce synthetic drugs, and drug lab equipment. All drugs and precursors, as well and lab equipment, were incinerated at the locations where they were discovered.

Military officials emphasized that the significant seizures will have an effect on the financial and operational structure of the criminal groups operating in this region. These groups are responsible for the large-scale distribution large of methamphetamine, marijuana, cocaine, crystal, heroin, and fentanyl to the United States and other destinations around the world. Also, Breitbart local law enforcement contacts attributed the fight for street-level sales of methamphetamine and for most of the street level gang killings that have engulfed the country to these groups.

A recent report released by a non-government agency which ranks the 50 deadliest cities in the world listed five Mexican municipalities in the top six and nine of the top 20 in the world. The dismantling of the drug labs by Mexican Navy personnel will also reduce environmental pollution. Drug cartels are known to dump waste material used for the production of synthetic drugs into rivers and streams damaging the ecosystem according to a government statement.

Recently, Mexican federal police seized more than 550 pounds of methamphetamine, heroin, and fentanyl near San Luis, Arizona, after a short pursuit. FEMA Contractor Arrested For Cocaine Distribution… To Kids

Joseph Lipsey III, CEO of Chattanooga-based transportation companies Lipsey Logistics and Lipsey Trucking, was arrested on Tuesday in Aspen, CO, for distribution of cocaine to a minor, three counts of serving alcohol to a minor, possession of drug paraphernalia, and providing nicotine to minors. Lipsey’s wife Shira and son, Joseph Lipsey IV, were arrested Monday on similar counts.

Under Colorado law, if convicted of the distribution charge, the Lipsey parents would each face a mandatory sentence of between eight and 32 years in prison.

The Lipseys were each released on $100,000 cash-only bonds. In January, Joseph Lipsey IV was charged with two counts of vehicular assault after a Tesla SUV he was alleged to have been driving careened off the road, injuring himself and four other teens in the car.

The Lipseys saw an opportunity in freight brokerage when the second Bush administration began privatizing and outsourcing disaster relief, where previously the federal government had leaned on the military.

A small water company in the family’s portfolio helped the Lipseys secure an award to provide bottled water for hurricane relief.

In 2003, Lipsey had engaged UPS for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) logistics and transportation support for disaster relief, but almost immediately Hurricane Isabel hit the global logistics conglomerate realized that the task of providing disaster relief logistics was more realistic with an asset-based truckload provider than through independent brokerage capacity. UPS handed over the business to US Xpress, which managed relief logistics on behalf of Lipsey.

Joe Lipsey soon realized that there was a lot of money to be made in using brokerage capacity and by the 2005 hurricane season, the Lipseys had launched their own brokerage to move water and ice on a cost-plus basis for the government.

Lipsey Logistics has been investigated on numerous occasions for failure to comply with federal rules around deadlines, botched paperwork, and according to a government investigation, in billing more than $800,000 in unsupported Federal payments.

On NPR this morning, David Greene interviewed Jonathan Greenblatt of the Anti Defamation League about the mass murders in the New Zealand mosques and asked how common it is for “hate speech online and in social media platforms” to “turn into an actual mass shooting this terrible?”

Greenblatt said the attack is unprecedented.

Well I think this act of violence really doesn’t have a precedent as far as we know, murdering people in a mosque like this, and the social media dimension is something new. However, hate speech on-line is an increasing problem. We’ve got a big problem on our hands. We need to recognize social media allows white supremacy much like other forms of hate to travel across borders. and we’ve got to recognize it for the global terror threat that it really is.

Israel journalist facing trial for calling soldiers who beat Palestinians ‘animals’

An Israeli journalist who called Israeli army soldiers “animals” for beating a Palestinian father and son in custody is to face trial.

Oshrat Kotler, a journalist with Israel’s Channel 13, is to face trial on charges of incitement, incrimination of suspects, failure to grant a right of reply and more after she called several soldiers accused of beating two Palestinians in custody “human animals”, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Speaking on the channel’s news programme in February, Kotler said:

When you send your children to the [Israeli] army, they are kids. You send them to the [occupied Palestinian] territories, and they come back as human animals. This is the result of the occupation.

Her comments allegedly prompted complaints from thousands of viewers, as well as complaints to Israel’s Press Council, an independent body established to safeguard press freedoms and outline journalism ethics. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also responded to Kotler’s comments, saying her words “deserve every condemnation” and that he is “proud of the [Israeli army] soldiers and loves them very much.”

She now faces trial and will appear at a court hearing, though it is unclear when she will be summoned.

‘I don’t care about your ID’: US student assaulted by Israel soldiers at Al-Aqsa

Tensions have been rising in Jerusalem in recent weeks, after Palestinians re-entered the Al-Rahma Gate area of Al-Aqsa Mosque and performed prayers there for the first time in over 15 years.

Three American women were violently assaulted by Israeli occupation forces as they attempted to help a disabled woman at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday, despite showing soldiers their passports.

Virginia nursing student Nour Hawash, who is in Jerusalem on vacation, was taking photos with her mother and sister after midday prayers when Israeli occupation soldiers stormed the compound and started to evacuate the Dome of the Rock.

“Suddenly we heard these shots being fired and people just started running all over the place. We saw the IDF [Israeli soldiers], guns pointed, running, trying to chase people. So we just ran with everyone else to the side,” Nour told MEMO.

The number of Israeli troops in the courtyard quickly grew, from a dozen to between 50 to 100 soldiers; Nour also saw several Palestinian men being arrested.

“They were not letting anyone near the Dome of the Rock, they had surrounded it from all its doors,” the 21 year-old student says. “And there was an old lady being wheeled out as she was leaving the prayer area and she fell out of her wheelchair and she was unable to get back in. And I saw that a couple of women were trying to help her, but they were being shoved so I tried to go in as well.”

However as Nour moved towards the elderly woman, she found herself shoved to the floor by an Israeli soldier, who cuffed one of her wrists and proceeded to sit on her to stop her from moving.

Israeli arms industry’s “great leap” in Central America

Halfway through Donald Trump’s presidency, Israel’s decades-long role in Central America is scaling new heights of military and political influence.

Israel has wasted no time securing valuable arms deals in this part of the world, deals that now account for nearly 20 percent of its arms exports. This scale of activity hasn’t occurred since the Ronald Reagan administration in the 1980s, when far-right rulers in Central America circled the wagons.

Tacit US approval for the purchase of such weapons has ensured Honduran and Guatemalan support at the United Nations for Donald Trump’s decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The changeover from Barack Obama’s two terms as president to Trump has heralded a resurgence of policy trends among the US, Israel and US-dominated Central American countries reminiscent of the transitional Carter-Reagan years.

The migrant caravans in fall and winter, meanwhile, have focused attention on the plight of Central Americans fleeing three countries ravaged by decades of US intervention: Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Sparse attention has been placed on how the caravans travel across a more than 2,000 mile Israeli-exported military and homeland security terrain that has expanded across Central America since the 1980s, escalating after the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.

The monitored terrain now covers all of Mexico as well as up through, and beyond, the US-Mexico border. Israeli boundary enforcement and surveillance products are deployed along the migrant and refugee trail, the subject of this author’s next book that traces Israeli involvement throughout the international regions between Central America and the US-Mexico border.

As the regional conditions that prompted the caravans’ repeated departures demonstrate no signs of quieting, the Israeli arms industry interests in the region will likely grow.

But while the military-security dimension is both Israeli and American, the US asserts ownership over the geography. In 2012, Alan Bersin, Commissioner of US Customs and Border Protection under Barack Obama, declared that “Guatemala’s border with Chiapas [Mexico] is now our southern border.”

With millions of dollars in US military aid poured into Mexican immigration enforcement practices, “Mexico is doing the dirty work, the very dirty work, for the United States,” observed Franciscan Friar Tomás González Castillo.

Castillo runs the “72” migrant shelter to aid Central Americans desperate to cross Mexico, which acts, spatially speaking, so much like a vertical border of death (rather than a horizontal one) that Mexican human rights advocates call the entire country “a graveyard for migrants.”

In effect, with its security aid utilized at all junctions, Israel has contributed to the US Border Patrol’s strategic “layered approach” of ratcheting up Mexico’s proxy enforcement measures.

By the end of Obama’s tenure, Israel’s burgeoning presence in Central America was in the cards. Just ahead of Trump’s inauguration in January 2017, historian Greg Grandin, writing in The Nation, advised those watching events to the south: “If you want to know how Donald Trump’s Latin American policy will play – and how he might deputize Israel to conduct a good bit of it – keep an eye on Honduras.”

Lawmakers contemplate a tough political sell: Raising their pay

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) is calling for a cost-of-living adjustment to lawmaker salaries, which have remained stagnant for a decade — but it's likely to be a tough sell.

In remarks before the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress this week, Hoyer said that "it is time to address the issue of member and staff pay and benefits."

"Americans ought to have our nation’s diversity of economic backgrounds better reflected in this House," he added.

The House voted to create the select committee at the start of the new Congress in January to come up with recommendations for modernizing the legislative branch by the end of the year. The panel has been specifically tasked with developing recommendations on a variety of issues, including the congressional schedule, procedures, technology, and staff retention and compensation.

Members of Congress have had their salaries frozen for a decade, after last receiving a pay adjustment in January 2009.

Hoyer has called for a lawmaker pay raise in the past to keep up with the cost of living, arguing that it would help ensure that people who aren’t wealthy can serve in Congress.

"The cost of rent, child care and other necessities has risen substantially in Washington and across the country in recent years, but members and staff pay and benefits have not kept pace with the private sector," Hoyer said this week. "If we want to attract a more diverse group of Americans to run for office and work on Capitol Hill, we need to make it possible for them to do so."

Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.), chairman of the select committee, told The Hill that a number of colleagues have privately asked if the committee will review member pay.

"I've had a couple of members offline also raise the issue and say, 'Hey, are you guys going to take a look at that?'" Kilmer said.

Rank-and-file members of Congress earn $174,000 annually, while members of leadership earn more. The Speaker earns the most at $223,500, while the majority and minority leaders in both chambers and the Senate president pro tempore earn $193,400.

The Congressional Research Service calculated that if members of Congress had received annual cost-of-living adjustments, the 2018 salary level would have been $208,000.

Even though their salaries haven’t gone up for a decade, lawmakers acknowledge it’s hard to argue for a pay raise when average Americans make far less. The Census Bureau reported last year that the median American household income was $61,372 in 2017.

"I would like a raise. I don't see any member that wouldn't like a raise," said Rep. Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.). "The issue at hand, though, is not that. The issue at hand is, does the public support a raise? And in the middle of everything else we're doing, should we utilize political capital on something like that? I would say no."

Kilmer noted that the select committee's final report will need support from two-thirds of its members to submit it to the rest of Congress, indicating that tackling the issue of lawmaker pay isn't likely to be a high priority.

Both Kilmer and Rep. Tom Graves (Ga.), the select committee's top Republican, were careful to avoid taking personal positions on lawmaker pay.
