Oak Ridge is the Oak Ridge of Manhattan project fame.
Currently home to the worlds fastest super computer, the Spallation Neutron source (where the funding for the Dallas particle accelerator went after the LHC was gonna be bigger so why make a smaller one?), Y-12 national security complex (where some (all?) of the nations nuclear weapons are maintained), and a big hub for everyone’s favorite: SAIC.
Best juice I got on Y12 is that growing up I had no fucking clue what went on there, but everyone’s parents worked there.
The juice on the SNS is pretty solid though. In my experiences nobody knows what the fuck it is, but it’s a big deal so that’s interesting? We toured it in high school while it was under construction and iirc the plan was to use it as an industrial neutron-scale microscope.
When Q mentions that there is a deliberate effort to cripple our nation’s war readiness by sabotaging the steel pipelines, the SNS would be where that conclusion was drawn. Iirc one of the main uses was to test airplane welds (I’m beginning to doubt if that’s even the truth) but if they’re neutron scanning everything and the steel sucks, the SNS would see that.
Oak Ridge is also home to one of the nation’s few national labs.
Oak Ridge is also famous for the entire fucking city workings towards the manhattan project and very, very few of the 30-40k people there every really knew what they were doing. So when people say a conspiracy of 100k is impossible because someone would blab, just point at Oak Ridge as real-life counterpoint that was possible with 1940s technology.
