Tide pods for the people! Sarah Lawrence College protesters demand free detergent (and a kangaroo court for a conservative professor)

I guess fabric softener can now be added to the list of things that are human rights? You think I’m kidding but this group of students at Sarah Lawrence College calling themselves the “Disapora Coalition” held a day-long sit in and then issued a list of demands premised on their bona fides as people of color in pain.

It’s worth mentioning that Sarah Lawrence College is one of the most expensive schools in the country with an annual tuition of $52,600 as of last year (ranking it 20th nationwide

After New Zealand, media show why it’s essential for public to see attackers’ names, histories, manifestos

There wasn’t much of a chorus on this point after the appalling attack on the mosques in New Zealand on Friday. But a few high-profile pundits did make it: the assertion that we need to embargo these killers’ names, faces, writings, backgrounds and so forth from publication, so that they can’t attain the gratification of notoriety.

I’m all for denying terrorists gratification. But there’s something that matters more, and that’s the public knowing the truth.

President Trump Saves Thousands of Lives

On December 6, the New York Times headlined: “U.S. Murder Rate for 2018 Is on Track for a Big Drop.” The story was based on homicide statistics from 66 large cities. (The official FBI numbers for 2018 won’t come out until September 2019.)

The murder rate in the United States in 2018 is on track for the largest one-year drop in five years.

***

Murder rose 23 percent nationally between 2014 and 2016 before leveling off in 2017.

The Times can’t think what might have caused the homicide rate to rise rather dramatically during the last years of the Obama administration. It does provide this useful chart, with the homicide rate for 2018 based on 66-city data:

So what happened in 2015 and 2016 to cause the violent crime rate, including the homicide rate, to rise after decades of decline? I can’t think of any explanation other than the Black Lives Matter movement and the relentless attacks on law enforcement that it engendered, which were supported by the Obama administration. But what happened when Donald Trump took over in the White House? The homicide and violent crime rates began to fall again. If the New York Times’s projection is correct, the second year of the Trump administration saw a steeper decline in the homicide rate.

Again, what could possibly have caused this change? I can’t think of a plausible theory other than the Trump administration’s renewed support for law enforcement and the waning of the anti-police Black Lives Matter movement. Something happened beginning in 2017 that has saved thousands of lives. If it wasn’t the new administration in Washington, what was it?

In socialized Venezuela, you pay for all that 'free' single-payer health care – with your vote

Most left-leaning Democratic presidential candidates are touting "single payer" health care insurance, which, as candidate Kamala Harris has admitted, does mean giving up one's private insurance whether you like it or not and having the government take over. It's billed as a panacea.

Here's the problem with having the government make all of your health care decisions for you, based on a New York Times report from socialist Venezuela:

In interviews, 16 members of Cuba’s medical missions to Venezuela — a signature element of relations between the two countries — described a system of deliberate political manipulation in which their services were wielded to secure votes for the governing Socialist Party, often through coercion.

Many tactics were used, they said, from simple reminders to vote for the government to denying treatment for opposition supporters with life-threatening ailments.

The Cuban doctors said they were ordered to go door-to-door in impoverished neighborhoods, offering medicine and warning residents that they would be cut off from medical services if they did not vote for Mr. Maduro or his candidates.

Many said their superiors directed them to issue the same threats during closed-door consultations with patients seeking treatment for chronic diseases.

Florida Kindergarten Teacher and Boyfriend Accused of Making Kiddie Porn

A Florida kindergarten teacher and her boyfriend have been charged with producing child porn and molesting a child, police say.

Audra Mabel, 34, faces child pornography charges after investigators discovered video of a molestation that she sent to her boyfriend, Justin Ritchie, 36. Police discovered the video during a separate investigation centering on allegations that Ritchie molested another child, Fox News reported.

Sanford, Florida, police arrested Ritchie on March 8 after the mother of a pre-school child told police that the man had inappropriately touched the girl “many times,” the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Russia's been investing in Arctic military bases

(Russian Ministry of Defense)

The comprehensive construction and upgrade of new airfields in the high Arctic has been practically completed and we are flying there and back, says Major General Igor Kozhin, leader of the Russian Naval Air Force.

Russia has over the last years invested heavily in military bases all over its wide-stretched Arctic, and there are now potent forces deployed all the way from the westernmost archipelago of Franz Josef Land to the Wrangle Island near the Bering Strait.

In addition comes the bases on Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and the New Siberian Island. New bases and air fields are also located on the Arctic mainland, from the Kola Peninsula to Cape Shmidt in the Chukotka Peninsula. The new base in Tiksi, was started in fall 2018 and is planned to be completed already in the course of the first half-year of 2019.

Upgrades are also in the making at the airfields of Vorkuta, Tiksi, Anadyr and Alykel.

The Navy's northernmost air force is located in the Franz Josef Land where the Nagurskoye base offers pilots a 2,500 meter long landing and takeoff strip.

In September 2018, two ships loaded with several thousand tons of construction materials left Murmansk for the Nagurskoye base. The cargo first of all included reinforced concrete plates and big bags with granulated materials for the airstrip, port authorities said.

In east Arctic archipelago of New Siberian Island, the Temp airbase is about 1,800 meters long.

According to Igor Kozhin, most of the new air fields will over the next few years be operational all though the year and capable of handling all kinds of aircraft.

"We have prepared the air force command structures and established a force than is capable of resolving its appointed tasks," Kozhin says to Krasnaya Zvezda, the newspaper owned and run by the country's Armed Forces.

Cuba Faces Oil Crisis As Venezuela Crumbles

When Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido earlier this week said he had decreed the suspension of all crude oil shipments to Cuba, he explained the move with the massive power outage that plunged a lot of Venezuela into darkness. Yet the call to turn the tap off for Cuba may re-emerge, this time as a more permanent goal on the opposition’s agenda.

Venezuela is Cuba’s largest oil supplier under a barter deal sealed by the late leaders of the two countries, Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. The deal envisaged Cuba getting regular shipments of crude in exchange for its highly trained doctors and other professionals to work in Venezuela.

At one point during this partnership, Cuba was receiving more than 100,000 bpd of Venezuelan crude, an analysis by Oliver Pieper for Deutsche Welle said. Now, however, this is probably down by a half as Venezuela struggles to keep its fields producing. Even so, Venezuelan crude is an important part of Cuba’s energy mix and its elimination from this mix would almost certainly lead to power outages for Cuba as well.

Unpatched Fujitsu Wireless Keyboard Bug Allows Keystroke Injection

A popular Fujitsu wireless keyboard is vulnerable to keystroke injection attacks that could allow an adversary to take control of a victim’s system.

Researchers with Germany-based SySS reported on Friday that the high-severity vulnerability allows an attacker to send wireless keystrokes from 150 feet away, to a computer system running a Fujitsu Wireless Keyboard Set LX901.

Researcher Matthias Deeg with SySS said that “exploiting the keystroke injection vulnerability also enables attacks against computer systems with an active screen lock. For example, to install malware when the target system is currently unused and unattended.”

When the walls come tumbling down

Socialism is alive and kicking in South America

The key issue in finding the reason for a concentration of socialist nations in such a specific part of the globe are the arguments for which it remains to succeed amongst a part of the population, and more interestingly, the views of the rest of the world.

Amongst all South American countries seeking the proletariat’s dictatorship, one has gained particular prominence lately: Venezuela. The impact produced by Hugo Chavez in international politics may remind in short-term history of Fidel Castro’s speeches in 1959 after taking over Havana. After an attempted coup d’état in 1992 and a subsequent two-year imprisonment, Chavez ran for the 1999 national elections with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, of Marxist ideology. During these eleven years in power, he has been as controversial for his national and foreign policies, as for his manners. A public detractor of the United States foreign policy, especially during the years of the Bush administration, and reluctant to globalisation, he has always manifested very clearly his aspirations to be a supranational organisation in South America and the Caribbean to achieve self-governing policies and independence from wealthier European and American countries.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (KUTV) — Yes. You read the headline right.

A cow temporarily halted traffic in a town just north of Indianapolis on Saturday, running away from police to the nearest "safe" spot: Chik-Fil-A.

According to the Noblesville Police Department, officers were chasing a runaway cow across Campus Parkway before it crossed the street and waited by the fast-food chain.

Indiana resident Athena Hopkins caught the wild cow crossing the street on video, which quickly became viral when she posted it to her Facebook page

Elites, Violence, and the Crisis of Governance in Latin America

Every discussion of violence in Latin America will begin with the shocking statistics. It is well-known that Latin America is responsible for 33 per cent of homicides in the world despite only having 9 per cent of its population. Even more starkly, a study of youth violence in the region also found that young males living in low-income settings have a one in 50 chance of being killed before they reach the age of 31. At the same time, over half of the 25 countries with the highest rates of femicide/feminicide in the world are in the Caribbean or Central and South America. Most of the victims are poor young women.

Smartphone Shipments In China Collapse To Six Year Low

Months after Apple stunned the market by announcing it would no longer be reporting quarterly iPhone unit sales, we have some insight as to the reason. February saw smartphone shipments in China collapse to their lowest levels in six years, indicating that the super-saturated industry has failed to turn around amidst a global economy that is grinding slower.

Shipments to China came in at 14.5 million units for February, down 19.9% from last year, according to Reuters, who cited the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology. It's the lowest total since February 2013.

February is traditionally a tough month for Chinese consumer purchases, as the Chinese spend a majority of the month celebrating the new year. However, this year's drop was more concentrated than past years, as a result of both a slowing economy and the ongoing U.S./China trade war.
