Food Stamp Usage Falls to 37 Million for First Time Since October 2009

The last time overall participation in food stamps reached this level was in October 2009, when 37,672,818 people were on the government dole, according to USDA data.

Overall food stamp participation had consistently declined since 2013, when the Obama administration was in power and enrollment in the program reached its highest levels in American history.

After 2013, SNAP enrollment plummeted once state legislatures passed laws requiring food stamp recipients to work, attend school, volunteer, or participate in job training for a set number of hours per week to receive benefits.

South Korea Sees No Sign of Imminent North Korean Missile Launch

South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo told his parliament on Monday there is no sign of an imminent missile launch from North Korea, despite some provocative activity spotted by satellite at the rocket launch facility in Tongchang-ri.

“It’s hasty to call it missile-related activity. Tongchang-ri is a launch site but we don’t see any activity being carried out for a missile launch,” Jeong said.

Jeong refused to comment on whether the launch facility has been restored to full operational capability. Analysts said earlier this month that significant construction activity has been detected by satellites at the facility, also known as Sohae. The activity seemed to have largely subsided as of last week.

South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon alluded on Monday to speculation that North Korea is ostentatiously refurbishing the Sohae facility, with activity like roof repairs that would be clearly visible to satellites, in order to build up leverage for nuclear negotiations. Cho said further analysis is needed to determine the North’s “exact intentions.”

Malware Experts: Google Invaded Privacy and Harmed Trust with Home Security ‘Fiasco’

Malwarebytes published a blog post recently outlining why Google’s latest privacy scandal is so damaging to user trust.

Popular anti-malware product manufacturer Malwarebytes published a blog post recently which outlines the issues with Silicon Valley Tech companies failing to disclose the full privacy implications of their products. Malwarebytes writer David Ruiz wrote:

A smart-home speaker shouldn’t be secretly hiding a video camera. A secure messaging platform shouldn’t have a government-operated backdoor. And a home security hub that controls an alarm, keypad, and motion detector shouldn’t include a clandestine microphone feature—especially one that was never announced to customers.

And yet, that is precisely what Google’s home security product includes.
