WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is ruling against a group of immigrants in a case about immigration detention.

The case the court ruled on involves immigrants who have committed a range of crimes while living in the United States.

Immigration law says that after a person commits a crime for which they can be deported and serves their sentence, the government should take them into immigration custody when they’re released. The government can then hold them. But the government doesn’t always immediately detain those people.

In the case before the justices, a group of mostly green card holders argued that unless they were picked up immediately after finishing their prison sentence they should get a hearing to argue for their release while deportation proceedings go forward. The high court disagreed.

IN Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission files complaint against AG Curtis Hill

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) - The Indiana Supreme Court's Disciplinary Commission filed a disciplinary complaint against Attorney General Curtis Hill Tuesday morning.

Four women, including State Rep. Mara Candelaria Reardon, accused Hill of sexually harassing and groping them at a party celebrating the end of the 2018 legislative session last March.

In Tuesday's complaint, the Commission said Hill "engaged in a pattern of misconduct" and "committed criminal acts, each of which reflects adversely on his honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer," among other issues that violate the state's Rules of Professional Conduct for Attorneys at Law.

Special Prosecutor Dan Sigler declined to file charges in October, saying he believed Hill's accusers but that he didn't have enough evidence for a criminal case. In a spearate investigation, state Inspector General Lori Torres compiled a 25-page report that similarly showed she believed the accusers but decided Hill didn't break any state ethics rules.

Hill has publicly refused to resign, so the four women called on lawmakers to impeach him. Neither chamber passed a bill to do so.

The Disciplinary Commission is the agency of the Indiana Supreme Court responsible for investigating and prosecuting claims of misconduct against lawyers licensed to practice law in Indiana. If the Court agrees with the complaint, the justices have the power to discipline Hill as a practicing attorney in the state of Indiana.

Hill has 30 days to respond.

Pennsylvania Rep. Brian Ellis, Accused of Sex Assault, Resigns From State House

Pennsylvania State Rep. Brian Ellis has resigned six days after a woman accusing him of sexual assault filed a formal complaint with the state’s House Republican leadership. Ellis, whose district is in Butler County near Pittsburgh, denies allegations that he had sex with a woman in late 2015 while she was incapacitated and without her consent. The investigation into the alleged incident is ongoing. In an announcement Monday, Ellis said he would resign effective immediately. “It is with immense gratitude to the sacrifices made by my family, the support of my constituents, and the friendship of my colleagues that I have concluded that it is in the best interests of my family, the residents of the 11th House District, and my own health that I resign from the General Assembly,” said Ellis, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer. In a statement last week, Ellis’ law firm described the accusations as “just plain false” and an effort to “generate sensational press coverage.” Jennifer Storm, an advocate who has acted as a spokesperson for the woman, called Ellis’ decision to resign a sign that there is “a new day in Harrisburg.”
