US strongly looking at NATO membership for Brazil - Trump

US President Donald Trump has said that he is seriously looking at NATO membership or some other formal alliance with Brazil as he welcomed Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to the White House on Tuesday.

Bolsonaro made an unusual trip to the CIA headquarters yesterday, the first day of his trip to the US during which he hopes to articulate a pro-US stance and to expand trade ties and diplomatic cooperation.

Brazil's president was one of the first to throw his support behind Venezuela's pro-US opposition leader Juan Guaido after Trump declared support for him in January.

Ahead of Bolsonaro's trip, a senior Trump administraion official touted the "historic remaking" of the US-Brazil relationship to McClatchy.

Bolsonaro endorsed Trump's southern border wall and immigration policy in an interview with Fox News on Monday night and echoed Trump's own rhetoric, saying that the "vast majority" of potential immigrants "do not have good intentions."

"They do not intend to do the best or do good to the US people," he said.

The right-wing leader, who rose to the presidency after an anti-establishment campaign modelled on Trump's own 2016 candidacy, has been branded the 'Trump of the Tropics' by some media.

“I’m willing to open my heart up to [Trump] and do whatever is good, to the benefit of both the Brazilian and the American people,” he told Fox.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald, who has been an outspoken critic of Bolsonaro and who lives in Brazil, tweeted on Monday that during his time reporting on the infamous Edward Snowden files, he was repeatedly "warned" that the CIA's largest permanent presence is in Brazil due to the intelligence agency's Cold War activities, including its role in helping to overthrow Brazil's democratically elected government in 1964.

Aussie PM calls for global internet crackdown in wake of Christchurch attacks

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for a global crackdown on social media in the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque shootings, one of which was streamed live on Facebook and viewed thousands of times.

“It is unacceptable to treat the internet as an ungoverned space,” Morrison wrote in a letter to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ahead of the upcoming G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan in June.

“It is imperative that the global community works together to ensure that technology firms meet their moral obligation to protect the communities which they serve and from which they profit,” Morrison added.

In a report on the incident, Facebook said that less than 200 people actually watched the carnage unfold live, but the archived video of the attack in which 50 people were killed and over 40 injured was then reportedly streamed some 4,000 times before it was eventually taken down. The first user complaint was lodged some 29 minutes after the attack had begun.

Israeli lawmaker GUNS DOWN rival Arab politician in bizarre campaign ad

Incendiary Knesset member and notorious Natalie Portman-hater Oren Hazan has released a “satirical” campaign ad where he shoots and kills Arab lawmaker Jamal Zahalka, who has since filed a report on the ad police.

In Israel’s competitive election campaigns, which have included ads of the government’s left opposition surrendering to ISIS, several prominent politicians giving the audience the middle-finger and an outlandish mock-commercial for ‘Fascism-scented’ perfume, candidates hoping to capture the voters’ attention have to really go all out.

If anyone is up to the challenge, it’s Oren Hazan of PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, whose over-the-top rhetoric and antics have earned him the public's attention, for better or worse, on several occasions… usually for the worse.

Nonetheless, he has perhaps outdone even himself this time, releasing a campaign ad with his head superimposed over Clint Eastwood’s in a famous scene from the classic American Western film The Good the Bad and The Ugly. In the scene, Eastwood’s character guns down a would-be assailant from inside a bathtub, in Hazan’s version the murdered man’s head has been swapped with Zahalka’s.

The video was met with a torrent of negative feedback calling him a“degenerate” and mocking his election chances.

Zahalka himself, on the other hand, took the bizarre threat a bit more seriously, and has reportedly filed a complaint with the police.

Zahalka is the leader of the Arab-majority Balad party which advocates for Arab rights and improved democratic freedoms in Israel – something that Hazan definitely doesn’t approve-of, given his history of offensive remarks against Palestinians. The Jewish politician has become “famous” for berating a grieving Arab mother trying to visit her incarcerated son, for threatening to execute an entire Palestinian family for their relative’s alleged crime and for expressing his desire to kick teenage resistance icon Ahed Tamimi in the face.

Several Brits arrested for comments about New Zealand attacks

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) currently have three people in custody in relation to offenses relating to comments made about the New Zealand terrorist attack.

Early Sunday morning officers were called to Queensway, Rochdale, to a report of a taxi driver being abused and threatened by members of the public who were referencing the terrorist attacks in New Zealand.

Officers quickly attended and two people, a man aged 33 and a woman aged 34, were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences. They were interviewed by detectives later that day.

Separately, police arrested a woman aged 38 from the Rochdale area for a racially aggravated public order offense following comments made online about the New Zealand attack. She remains in custody for questioning.

Separately, a 24-year-old man from the Oldham area was arrested for malicious communications referencing the New Zealand attack. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Both Oldham and Rochdale are migrant-heavy areas – and the latter is site of one of Britain’s more infamous rape gang scandals.

Assistant Chief Constable of GMP, Russ Jackson, said: “It is absolutely clear that compassion and support is how the overwhelming majority of people feel and, as always, Greater Manchester stands together.”

“Over the weekend we have had, however, a small number of incidents where people have either posted or made remarks referencing the horrible events in New Zealand, particularly online where people often think it is acceptable to abuse others.”

“People are entitled to free speech and this is always respected, however, where this crosses the boundary into criminal offences, let me be really clear, we will make arrests and if the evidence is there we will seek the prosecution of those involved.”

In addition, social media firms and some news outlets have been criticised for sharing livestream footage of the attack and failing to address “far-right” extremism on their platforms.

In London, police have launched an investigation after a burning rag was found in a road near a mosque.

The cloth was extinguished by Metropolitan Police officers in Southall and sent for forensic examination. Nobody was injured.

President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Junior, has said British Prime Minister Theresa May should have listened to his father’s advice on how to conduct Brexit negotiations as the process to extricate the United Kingdom from the European Union bounces from one crisis to the next.

The comments from Donald Junior came in an opinion column published in British right of centre, formerly conservative, newspaper the Daily Telegraph, where Mr Trump echoed previous comments by the President and Brexit leader Nigel Farage by linking the Brexit referendum to the 2016 Presidential election, and the forthcoming 2020 race.

It has now been 1,000 days since the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, but despite nearly three years of ‘negotiations’ between the government and the European Union, the country seems as far as ever from actually leaving. Prime Minister May has even gone so far as threatening the country with no Brexit at all if politicians don’t line up to support her unpopular and controversial Brexit deal.

Mr Trump compared the no-holds-barred tactics by the British and European establishment to stop Brexit from going ahead to attacks on his father in the U.S., stating that the fight for independence was not yet over and that “the people of both the UK and the US must reaffirm the decisions they made in 2016 to stand up for themselves against the global elite.”

Noting the “desperate, last-gasp attempt by those previously in power” to overturn the 2016 revolutions, Mr Trump was particularly scornful of UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who has led the United Kingdom through the bulk of the Brexit process, while achieving little for the British people.

New Zealanders rushing to buy guns before new gun laws take effect

There has been a rush on gun shops, with people “panic buying”, in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack and in anticipation of the Government tightening gun laws.

Following the Christchurch shooting, which killed 50 people on Friday, the prime minister promised to tighten gun laws.

Following Jacinda Ardern’s comments on Saturday morning, gun shop owners – at bricks and mortar stores, and online – experienced a jump in sales.

The Christchurch branch of Gun City was busy on Saturday, with people buying guns and equipment.

Firearms owners posted online about “panic buying”, where people were rushing to stores to purchase firearms, following the prime minister’s comments about plans to tighten gun laws.

On the Facebook group Kiwi Gun Blog, firearms owners and sellers said there was heightened buying of semi-automatic weapons, ammunition and magazines around the country on Saturday.

Meanwhile, an Auckland gun shop owner recorded a significant increase in sales of semi-automatic weapons, and the phone ran off the hook with enquires about semi-automatics, including the prices and how much stock the store had left.

Multiple sources and reports on the New Zealand newspaper portal stuff.co.nz described continuous inquiries on the AR-15, the popular rifles being out of stock, and panic buying.

Visiting Gun City in Auckland, the self-described “largest gun store in the world,” a Stuff reporter wrote that “a staff member was overheard telling someone on the phone that the AR-15 had sold out, but there were other models of semi-automatic guns available. The rack where the AR-15s had been displayed was empty.”

Ilhan Omar Spoke the Truth

In a widely-reprinted National Review column of March 8, Israel advocate Jonah Goldberg demonstrated how deceitful attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s supposed anti-Semitism really are. Goldberg goes on for paragraphs claiming that Omar demonizes Jews with "classic anti-Semitic claims" about Jewish wealth and power.

What he doesn’t do, even once, is quote what Rep. Omar actually said, instead making up charges such as, "The gist of Omar’s complaints is that the perfidious, string-pulling Hebraic hordes control Congress with their shady shekels, Israel has hypnotized the world, and American Jews are guilty of dual loyalty."

This is typical of the smears critics Left and Right heaped on Omar. But in reality, she said nothing anti-Jewish. She didn’t mention Jews at all. She simply pointed out the obvious fact that the Israel Lobby spends large amounts of money supporting politicians who favor Israel and opposing politicians who don’t. As a result, she says, "I am told every day that I am anti-American if I am not pro-Israel. I find that to be problematic, and I am not alone."

Israel and its supporters play the anti-Semitism card all the time against any criticism of Israel. For decades, Israel’s go-to strategy to disarm critics has been to paint them as Jew-haters. Whether Israel is bombing Lebanon, massacring Gazans, ethnically-cleansing Jerusalem, pushing the world into wars, or setting up an apartheid state, their defense against critics has always been to scream "anti-Semitism" at them until they back down or are crushed. This policing can go to ridiculous extremes. Recently, a completely apolitical billboard in Boston honoring first responders in Gaza was taken down because Israel supporters demanded its removal, calling it "anti-Semitic" and "terrorist."

This strategy has secured US support for Israel for decades. When Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu addressed a joint session of the US Congress to oppose President Barack Obama’s Iran treaty, he received 26 standing ovations. Most of those applauding were not Jews, but they were our Senators and Representatives.

Empire of Absurdity: Recycled Neocons, Recycled Enemies

There are times when I wish that the United States would just drop the charade and declare itself a global empire. As a veteran of two imperial wars, a witness to the dark underside of America’s empire-denial, I’ve grown tired of the equivocation and denials from senior policymakers. The U.S. can’t be an empire, we’re told, because – unlike the Brits and Romans – America doesn’t annex territories outright, and our school children don’t color its colonies in red-white-and-blue on cute educational maps.

But this distinction, at root, is rather superficial. Conquest, colonization, and annexation are so 19th century – Washington has moved beyond the overt and engages in the (not-so) subtle modern form of imperialism. America’s empire over the last two decades – under Democrats and Republicans – has used a range of tools: economic, military, political, to topple regimes, instigate coups, and starve "enemy" civilians. Heck, it didn’t even start with 9/11 – bullying foreigners and overturning uncooperative regimes is as American as apple pie.

Still, observing post-9/11, post-Iraq/Afghanistan defeat, Washington play imperialism these days is tragicomically absurd. The emperor has no clothes, folks. Sure, America (for a few more fleeting years) boasts the world’s dominant economy, sure its dotted the globe with a few hundred military bases, and sure it’s military still outspends the next seven competitors combined. Nonetheless, what’s remarkable, what constitutes the real story of 2019, is this: the US empire can’t seem to accomplish anything anymore, can’t seem to bend anybody to its will. It’s almost sad to watch. America, the big-hulking has-been on the block, still struts its stuff, but most of the world simply ignores it.

Make no mistake, Washington isn’t done trying; it’s happy to keep throwing good money (and blood) at bad: to the tune of a cool $6 trillion, 7,000 troop deaths, and 500,000 foreign deaths – including maybe 240,000 civilians. But what’s it all been for? The world is no safer, global terror attacks have only increased, and Uncle Sam just can’t seem to achieve any of its preferred policy goals.

A UN inquiry finds Israel used live ammunition against unarmed protesters, killing at least 189 Palestinians last year.

Geneva, Switzerland - Israeli forces committed violations against Palestinian protesters in Gaza last year that may amount to war crimes, a United Nations report said on Monday.

A UN Independent Commission of Inquiry found that Israeli soldiers used live ammunition against unarmed protesters, killing at least 189 Palestinians during protests near the separation fence between Israel and Gaza last year.

Over 6,000 Palestinians were also injured in Israeli live fire in the period between March 30, 2018, and December 31, 2018.

"The Israeli Security Forces committed violations of international human rights and humanitarian law," said UN Commissioner Kaari Betty Murungi. "Some of those violations may constitute war crimes or crimes against humanity, and must be immediately investigated by Israel."

The 252-page report scrutinises the Israel Defence Forces' directives for snipers' use of lethal force against Palestinian protesters, who have been regularly demonstrating along the separation fence.

"The Commission found there was no justification for Israel's security forces killing and injuring persons who pose no imminent threat of death or serious injury to those around them, including journalists, health workers and children," said Santiago Canton, the chair of the commission.

Canton said the commission, which presented the report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, had reasonable grounds to believe that during the protests, labelled the Great March of Return, Israeli soldiers killed and gravely injured civilians who were neither participating directly in hostilities nor posing an imminent threat to the Israeli Security Forces, or to the civilian population in Israel.

"When examining the Israel Defence Forces' use of live fire against the Palestinian protesters, the Commission, however, found that application of lethal force was in the majority of cases authorised unlawfully. This inevitably led to arbitrary deprivation of life," said Canton.

The Commissioner Canton called upon Israel to immediately ensure that the rules of engagement of their security forces are revised to comply with international legal standards, especially in view of the one-year anniversary of the protests.

Germany deports Palestinian convicted of terror, cancels BDS event at Israel's request

Rasmea Odeh, who was convicted for her part in a 1969 bombing that killed two Israeli students, was scheduled to speak at the Berlin event

Germany announced Saturday it would revoke the visa of a Palestinian woman convicted on terrorism charges in Israel, preventing her participation in a cultural event in Berlin organized by a group that supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

The Israeli Embassy in Germany, in cooperation with the Strategic Affairs Ministry, has acted over the last few days to block Rasmea Odeh from taking part in a protest event in Berlin's Kreuzberg neighborhood. The event, titled "Palestinian Women in the Liberation Struggle," was scheduled for Saturday night.
