To them, hopelessness is comfortable and superior/special. They are special because they 'realize the truth', but the truth is that everything they do is pointless.
It's a round-about way of justifying a nihilistic apathy. As if there could ever be an absolute truth to the world. The idea that the world outside the matrix is, somehow, more or less real than the matrix, itself, is simply a matter of infinite regression. At some point, you reach the question of whether you believe your existence, actions, and the people around you matter.
The cabal has their answer to this question. They believe that humanity has no purpose or meaning on its own. They give humanity its purpose. They are the ones who weave the clothing - the fate - we wear, and therefore have concluded they are the gods.
