Boeing faces rare criminal probe of certification process after two 737 Max crashes

NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) - United States federal authorities began a criminal probe of the certification process for the new 737 Max planes, after the first of two catastrophic crashes since October, according to a person who wasn't authorised to speak about the investigation and asked not to be named.

A Lion Air 737 Max jet crashed soon after take-off from Jakarta on Oct 29 last year, triggering questions over whether the plane's new anti-dive system was to blame. Less than five months later, an Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max 8 crashed near Addis Ababa on March 10. Nearly 350 died in both disasters.

Now, Boeing and the US regulator are facing intense scrutiny over the plane's avionics and how the aircraft was certified.

President Trump Visits The Last Tank Plant In America, Which He Helped Save

President Trump’s visit this week to the Army’s sole surviving tank plant in Lima, Ohio is the first such presidential visit there since George W. Bush stopped by in 2003. President Obama never visited, and the depressed level of military spending during his presidency nearly shut the place down.

That is not an exaggeration. Wrongly assuming that Russia had ceased to be a threat to global security, the Obama administration cut the number of Army armored brigades to a record low of nine. Production of upgraded Abrams tanks at the Lima site fell to a single tank per month, and the Army seriously considered mothballing its only facility capable of producing the nation’s premier land warfare weapon.

As if all that were not enough, the Obama administration also killed a badly needed Marine amphibious landing vehicle that would have been built at Lima. The tank plant had been renamed the Joint Systems Manufacturing Center in the expectation it would be turning out armored combat systems for both the Army and the Marines, but Obama’s defense team decided the Marines could do without an agile replacement for their slow moving, 40-year-old amphibious vehicles.

Puzzling number of men tied to Ferguson protests have died

1 of 4

FILE - In this Aug. 13, 2014, file photo Edward Crawford Jr., returns a tear gas canister fired by police who were trying to disperse protesters in Ferguson, Mo. Six young men with connections to the Ferguson protests, including Crawford, have died, drawing attention on social media and speculation in the activist community that something sinister is at play. Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests and note that only two were homicides. But activists and observers remain puzzled and wonder if they'll ever get answers. Crawford fatally shot himself in May 2017 after telling acquaintances he had been distraught over personal issues, police said. (Robert Cohen/St. Louis Post-Dispatch via AP, File)

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP) — Two young men were found dead inside torched cars. Three others died of apparent suicides. Another collapsed on a bus, his death ruled an overdose.

Six deaths, all involving men with connections to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, drew attention on social media and speculation in the activist community that something sinister was at play.

Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officer’s fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.

But some activists say their concerns about a possible connection arise out of a culture of fear that persists in Ferguson 4 ½ years after Brown’s death, citing threats — mostly anonymous — that protest leaders continue to receive.

The Rev. Darryl Gray said he found a box inside his car. When the bomb squad arrived, no explosives were found but a 6-foot (1.8-meter) python was inside.

Russian Air Force swarms jihadist positions northwestern Syria

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:45 P.M.) – The Russian Air Force is currently conducting several flights over the Idlib and Aleppo governorates this afternoon, a military source in northwestern Syria told Al-Masdar.

According to the source, the Russian Air Force was concentrated on the areas controlled by the jihadist group Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham in these parts of the Aleppo and Idlib governorates.

While the Russian aerial presence is heavy over northwestern Syria, they have yet to launch any attacks against Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

The Russian Air Force is likely conducting these flights to gather intel on the jihadist rebels; this is something they have done on several occasions in the past.

Last week, the Russian Air Force redeployed their Su-25 jets to their Hmeimim Airbase in southwestern Latakia.
