Thierry Baudet’s anti-Islam and anti-migrant party entered the lower house of parliament for the first time in 2017 with two seats. The FvD wants the Netherlands to leave the eurozone and the EU, and supports a closed-door immigration policy.

“Rutte governments have left our borders wide open, letting in hundreds of thousands of people with cultures completely different to ours,” said Mr Baudet in his victory speech. “We are being destroyed by the people who should protect us.”

Mr Baudet has also been compared with Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former chief strategist. He shares Mr Bannon’s intellectual brand of conservatism that laments what they see as the erosion of western values as a result of Muslim migration and denies the effects of climate change.

The election result means Mr Rutte’s four-party coalition will be stripped of its majority in the 75-seat Senate, forcing the prime minister to approach the Greens or centre-left. Mr Rutte refused to rule out a partnership with Mr Baudet’s populists, saying he did not have the “luxury” to exclude any possible partners in the senate.
