Top Prosecutor Probing Ukrainian Plot to Boost Clinton in 2016 Election

Ukraine’s top prosecutor has opened an investigation into whether the country’s law enforcement illegally leaked information in order to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election in favor of Hillary Clinton. Ukraine Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko told The Hill that the probe was prompted by the release of an audio recording of a top Ukrainian law enforcement official saying his agency released damaging information on then Trump-campaign chairman Paul Manafort in order to damage then-candidate Donald Trump and boost Clinton. The dirt on Manafort made it into the hands of U.S. media in 2016 and prompted Manafort’s removal from the campaign. The information continued to be at the center of allegations against Trump’s campaign beyond the election. Manafort was sentenced in early March to seven years in prison for crimes relating to his work in Ukraine that predated his stint with Trump’s campaign.

News of the investigation in Ukraine arrived as the public waits for special counsel Robert Mueller to deliver the final report on his Russia collusion investigation to the Justice Department, which is widely expected to be soon. Like the conclusions of two congressional investigations, Mueller is not expected to charge Trump with any wrongdoing. A Ukrainian court ruled in late 2018 that the release of information on Manafort amounted to an illegal attempt to influence the election in the United States. Lutsenko told The Hill’s John Solomon that the release of the information was particularly troubling because the Ukrainian law enforcement agency involved was in frequent contact with the Obama administration’s U.S. Embassy in Kiev.

The FBI investigated Manafort in 2014 but declined to prosecute him. The bureau had set up an office in the Kiev embassy during the investigation. Two years later, dirt on Manafort surfaced in U.S. media, followed closely by the FBI’s infamous “Crossfire Hurricane” investigation of the Trump campaign, which revolved largely around a dossier on Trump compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele and paid for by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Clinton campaign. The bureau eventually terminated Steele for talking to the media, but he continued to feed information to the FBI’s Crossfire team through senior Justice Department official Bruce Ohr.

According to Solomon, Steele’s quest to compile the dossier on Trump began as a series of conversations with Ohr in late 2015 and early 2016 while seeking information on Manafort. President Donald Trump spotlighted Solomon’s report on Twitter.

Lutsenko also accused the Obama-era U.S. Embassy in Kiev of interfering with his ability to prosecute corruption cases. Lutsenko claimed to have received from the U.S. ambassador a list of people whose prosecutions the ambassador advised not to pursue. The U.S. ambassador then declined to cooperate in an investigation of misappropriation of U.S. aid, a claim Lutsenko substantiated with a letter addressed to Ukraine’s deputy prosecutor general. “We are gravely concerned about this investigation for which we see no basis,” wrote U.S. embassy official George Kent.

The State Department issued a statement on March 20 that called Lutsenko’s claim about the do-not-prosecute “an outright fabrication.” The department also stated that it no longer provides financial support to Lutsenko’s office. Lutsenko isn’t the only one to complain about the U.S. embassy in Kiev. In 2018, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Texas) wrote a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo asking to recall Marie Yovanovitch, the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. According to Sessions, Yovanovitch “has spoken privately and repeatedly about her disdain for the current administration in a way that might call for the expulsion.” Sessions wrote that he had concrete evidence of Yovanovitch’s conduct.

Xi Arrives in Italy to Sign Landmark Deal as EU Mulls Stronger Action Against China

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Rome on March 21, beginning a three-day visit. In a move that worries the United States and its allies, Xi is set to sign an accord to make Italy the first major democracy to join China’s massive One Belt, One Road initiative. Italy, which seeks new export deals to boost its stalled economy, will become the first major industrialized nation in the Group of Seven to join the multi-billion-dollar project, which is designed to widen Beijing’s economic and geopolitical reach.

Meanwhile, European Union leaders are mulling a more defensive strategy on China ahead of an EU–China summit on April 9 to discuss concerns about the regime’s unfair trade and investment practices. This marks the first time the EU has discussed at the highest level how to deal with the communist regime.

Instagram to block anti-vaccine hashtags amid misinformation crackdown

Instagram said Thursday it plans to block a slew of anti-vaccine hashtags amid an ongoing crackdown on medical misinformation on the platform. The company, which is owned by Facebook, shared its plans after media outlets inquired about anti-vaccine misinformation continuing to spread on the social media giant's platforms. Facebook three weeks ago unveiled plans to combat anti-vaccine content, including a pledge that it would no longer promote anti-vaccine posts on Instagram's search and "explore" features.

The Atlantic and CNN on Thursday reported that Facebook and Instagram's search functions still recommend vaccine-related misinformation, including groups and hashtags that associate vaccinations with autism, a claim that scientists and experts have categorically debunked. "As part of our work to address health-related misinformation on Instagram, we’re looking at ways to minimize recommendations of this content and accounts that post it across Instagram - including in 'Suggested For You', Explore and hashtags," an Instagram spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday evening.

The spokesperson said the platform's planned "short-term measures" will include blocking hashtags associated with "known health-related misinformation including #vaccinescauseautism, #vaccinesarepoison, and #vaccinescauseids." As of Thursday evening, those hashtags had not yet been blocked. "We noted that this process would take place over several weeks," an Instagram spokesperson said. "But as we take action in the short-term we know that fighting misinformation is a long-term commitment."

When users click on a blocked Instagram hashtag, they are taken to a page without any results. That hashtag also will not show up in searches. Lawmakers and public health advocates have been pushing the country's largest social media companies to take stronger action against anti-vaccine content, arguing that the proliferation of medical misinformation has bolstered the movement of people who choose not to vaccinate themselves or their children. The recent measles outbreaks in the U.S. are in part due to the increasing number of people not getting vaccinations, and experts warn the movement largely uses social media to promote their views.

New Zealand Prime Minister: Gun Confiscation ‘Just The Beginning’ Of Things To Come

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Thursday that the nation now plans to enact extreme gun laws in the wake of last week's terrorist attack: Banning semiautomatic firearms and forcing citizens to turn in the banned weapons. The Arms (Military Style Semi-automatic Firearms) Order 2019 essentially bans all semi-automatic firerams that are capable of using a detachable magazine that can hold more than five rounds of ammunition. Ardern immediately began pushing for even more extreme gun control measures following last week's deadly attack, declaring that the nation would change its gun laws. On Thursday, Ardern appeared to take her comments even further, saying at a press conference. Moments later, Ardern added: "But be assured, this is just the beginning of the work we need to do."
