The wacko pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy theory has some friends in high places in South Carolina, where State Rep. Lin Bennett (R) has been posting on Facebook about her belief in QAnon.

QAnon is a kind of mega-Pizzagate, premised on anonymous internet posting that that claim that Trump is about to arrest top Democrats and either ship them off to Guantanamo Bay or just have them executed. QAnon has been linked to several violent incidents, including a Seattle stabbing and, incredibly, the recent murder of a mafia boss.

Bennett, who represents a Charleston-area district, has been posting about QAnon on Facebook since at least last year, even helping to “decode” the QAnon “clues” for her Facebook friends.

Last April, Bennett posted a guide to QAnon, calling it “a gem.” In September, Bennett added a series of QAnon clues to her Facebook page.

[[“To say they are ‘interesting’ is an understatement,” Bennett wrote. “Wow! Just wow!”]]

Bennett isn’t the first public official to back QAnon. In December, a councilwoman in California praised the conspiracy theory during a public meeting. In January, a Montana justice of the peace fumed at a reporter who doubted QAnon’s validity.

Still, Bennett is arguably the highest ranking politician to promote QAnon so far. At one point, she liked a comment that asked “You follow Q???” Later in September, Bennett posted another QAnon tip that promised (((Democrats))) would soon face Trump’s wrath.

“I really think there is PANIC in DC!” Bennett wrote, referencing a QAnon slogan.

OMG! Charleston area legislator reportedly endorses far-right conspiracy group QAnon

Charleston area legislator reportedly endorses far-right conspiracy group QAnon

The group is widely critical of President Trump's opponents

https://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/TheBattery/archives/2019/03/21/charleston-area-legislator-reportedly-endorses-far-right-conspiracy-group-qanon

A member of the South Carolina House of Representatives has repeatedly taken to social media to express support for QAnon, a far-right group that spreads pro-Trump conspiracy theories, according to a Daily Beast report published Thursday.

Linda "Lin" Bennett has represented parts of Charleston and Dorchester counties, including a large swath of West Ashley, in the state legislature since 2016.

According to the Daily Beast, the public official has used her Facebook account to spread the gospel of QAnon, whose disparate and unproven theories are largely based on the idea that government bureaucrats are working against Trump and his agenda as part of the "deep state," a phrase that Trump himself has adopted in attacks against the Department of Justice, where special counsel Robert Mueller is currently investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign.

Last year, Bennett posted a guide to QAnon and called it “a gem," the Daily Beast reports.

“To say they are ‘interesting’ is an understatement,” Bennett wrote after posting a series of QAnon clues to her page in September. “Wow! Just wow!”

When one friend asked her about a QAnon-related post, she replied, “They’re legit. And they haven’t been wrong.”

The group is widely considered to be connected to the Pizzagate conspiracy theory, which alleged that Democrats ran a secret child sex ring from a Washington, D.C. pizza shop. That idea inspired a 28-year-old North Carolina man to fire a rifle inside the business in December 2016 in an attempt to "self-investigate," according to police.

QAnon followers also believe that Trump's opponents are being secretly charged with crimes and sent to Guantanamo Bay, and some supporters have taken to accusing celebrities of being pedophiles.

Related GOP chairwoman and GOP candidate disagree about God's will: Peter vonLehe Ruegner records a conversation with Lin Bennett

Bennett was one of 50 delegates from South Carolina who supported Trump on the first ballot at the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bennett did not immediately respond to calls made by the City Paper to her office and home on Thursday, and her Twitter account is private, though it is unclear if this has been the case for a while.

In 2012, Bennett, then the chairwoman of the Charleston County Republican Party, was caught on video attempting to discourage a state House candidate from filing to run.

"You haven't been praying well," she told Peter vonLehe Ruegner, a candidate for District 110 at the time. "You've been following your heart. Can I talk to you about this before you do this?"

Charleston GOP chair claims Obama giving away cell phones to voters

GOP Phone Home

Posted by Chris Haire on Thu, Sep 27, 2012 at 1:32 PM

OK. Imagine you're walking down King Street. And you see all the folks lined up outside the Apple store to buy the iPhone 5. You want one, but you can't afford it. So you walk on, head down and in a funk, like Ann Romney after she had to wash dishes that one time when Consuela called in sick. Weep weep.

Now imagine there's a guy in a trenchcoat standing on the sidewalk. And he whispers to you, "Psst. You want a new iPhone, eh?"

Against your better judgment you answer, "Yes."

The man in the trenchcoat walks closer to you and whispers, "Here's what you do. Vote for Obama."

You step back, a look of shock on your face. Surely, this man is mad.

Sensing your disbelief, the man in the trenchcoat attempts to ease your mind. "I'm not joking. Obama is giving away free iPhones to anyone who votes for him," he says.

"Here," he adds, as he pulls an iPhone out of pocket. "Watch this video."

And you do. And lo and behold, you discover that what the man in the trenchcoat says is true.

Or at least that's what yahoos like Charleston GOP chair Lin Bennett want you to believe.

See, earlier today, Bennett tweeted a link to a post at Mitt Romney Central, proclaiming that Obama is giving away cell phones to voters, and not just any voters mind you — only minority voters. Bennett didn't offer a disclaimer. She didn't say that the claim needed to be factchecked. Nope. In fact, Bennett called it a "must see" video.

MUST SEE: Paid Protesters Admit Obama Will Give Them a Free Phone if They Vote For Him fb.me/1PWv3jvC9

— Lin Bennett (@LinBennett) September 27, 2012

After watching the video, it's clear that the lady who inadvertently alerted the Republican masses to Obama's dastardly plan isn't the most credible of sources. Truth be told, I don't see her sitting in on campaign strategy meetings with Obama and David Axelrod. But what gets me is this: If this is all the proof that GOPers like Bennett need to prove that Obama is giving cell phones to every minority voter who votes for him, then why does a birth certificate from the State of Hawaii simply not suffice?

Anyhow, here's the video in question:

For the record, the FCC offers free phone service to low-income families, which, of course, is drastically different from the claim that Bennett and Mitt Romney Central are making.
