‘Hundreds of thousands’ of protesters demand Algerian President Bouteflika leave office – reports

Hundreds of thousands of protesters packed downtown Algiers on Friday to demand President Abdelaziz Bouteflika leave office after 20 years in power, Reuters reports. Bouteflika bowed to the protesters last week by reversing plans to stand for a fifth term. However, the president has stopped short of stepping down and said he would stay in office until a new constitution is adopted, effectively extending his present term. Algeria’s army chief said earlier the public had expressed “noble aims” during protests against Bouteflika and the ruling FLN party withdrew its support for him.

Army plan would tap thousands of mainland soldiers for short-term Pacific rotations

The Army plans to rotate thousands of soldiers from the mainland through short-term Pacific deployments in pursuit of becoming a more expeditionary force, Army officials said Tuesday.

“The forces already assigned will remain assigned,” said Gen. Robert Brown, commander of U.S. Army Pacific, referring to the roughly 85,000 soldiers in the theater, primarily stationed in South Korea, Hawaii, Washington and Alaska.

“We will bring forces from [the mainland] over,” he said during a media roundtable at U.S. Army Pacific headquarters that included Army Under Secretary Ryan McCarthy and Gen. James McConville, vice chief of staff of the Army.

Brown said the number of troops to be tapped annually has not yet been set and would vary depending upon circumstances and the preferences of allies and partner nations hosting the troops.

“It would be a division headquarters and several brigades — you know, 5,000, 10,000 rotating over,” he said. “I would hesitate to throw a number out. It’ll depend on the scenario. It’ll depend on the exercise. There will be a continued focus on the assigned forces staying and the additional forces to come.”

Scientists From Around the World Call for Immediate Halt to ‘Genetically Altered Children’

Scientists and ethicists from around the world are warning of the consequences of failing to implement a temporary global halt on gene editing of human eggs, embryos, and sperm.

In a letter to the journal Nature, 18 scientists and ethicists from seven countries called for a global moratorium on the type of gene editing that can result in genetically altered babies. The letter was prompted by a 2018 announcement by a Chinese scientist declaring the birth of the world’s first gene-edited twin babies.

“The 18 signatories of this call include scientists and ethicists who are citizens of 7 countries. Many of us have been involved in the gene-editing field by developing and applying the technology, organizing and speaking at international summits, serving on national advisory committees and studying the ethical issues raised.”

Fears of “designer babies” have been on the rise in the last decade as scientists move closer to producing embryos which have been genetically modified to produce children with specific, desirable characteristics. This vision was once the exclusive domain of Hollywood movies like Gattaca, but now, a future where parents are able to pick and choose exactly how their child’s genes express themselves is eerily close.

Psychopaths Have Much To Teach Us About AI

AI is often programmed to learn how manipulate our emotions, and to measure success when we conform. This psychopathic trait is the pinnacle of social engineering and humans have very little awareness that it even happens. ⁃ TN Editor

What happens when machines learn to manipulate us by faking our emotions? Judging by the rate at which researchers are developing human-like AI agents, we’re about to find out.

Researchers around the world are trying to create more human-like AI. By definition, they’re developing artificial psychopaths. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – there’s nothing inherently wrong with being a psychopath, and all AI agents are artificial psychopaths simply because they lack the full range of neurotypical human emotion.

But the overlap between psychopathic behavior and AI agent behavior is undeniable. We should look into it before it’s too late.

Prisoner’s Dilemma

A trio of researchers from the University of Waterloo recently conducted an experiment to determine how displays of emotion can help AI manipulate humans into cooperation. The the study used a classic game-theory experiment called “The Prisoner’s Dilemma,” which shows why people who would benefit from cooperating often don’t.

Total Surveillance Society

Dystopia: Your Facial Record Follows You Everywhere

This is dystopia on steroids as cloud-based facial recognition builds databases of “offenders” and then shares it with other stores. If you get busted in one place, you might be denied to ever shop again. ⁃ TN Editor

At my bodega down the block, photos of shoplifters sometimes litter the windows, a warning to would-be thieves that they’re being watched.

Those unofficial wanted posters come and go, as incidents fade from the owner’s memory.

But with facial recognition, getting caught in one store could mean a digital record of your face is shared across the country. Stores are already using the technology for security purposes and can share that data — meaning that if one store considers you a threat, every business in that network could come to the same conclusion.

One mistake could mean never being able to shop again.

While that may be good news for shopkeepers, it raises concerns about potential overreach. It’s just one example of how facial recognition straddles the line between being a force for good and being a possible violation of personal privacy. Privacy advocates fear that regulations can’t keep up with the technology — found everywhere from your phone to selfie stations — leading to devastating consequences.

“Unless we really rein in this technology, there’s a risk that what we enjoy every day — the ability to walk around anonymous, without fearing that you’re being tracked and identified — could be a thing of the past,” said Neema Singh Guliani, the American Civil Liberties Union’s senior legislative counsel
