In 1981, Dr. Balazs, his wife and his son, Andre, founded Biomatrix, a biotechnology company that developed six hyaluronan products. It was sold in 2000 to Genzyme for an estimated $738 million.
Endre Alexander Balazs was born in Budapest on Jan. 10, 1920. His father, also named Endre, was an engineer who managed the Budapest Waterworks until the Communist takeover. His mother was the former Vilma Bonta.
