If true, it would make a lot of sense from a game theory perspective.

'Jane Doe' wants to stay out of the public eye as a victim. But if she's also a possible accomplice (or worse) in later crimes that are also in danger of being exposed, then her decision matrix has radically altered. Can't be an easy choice to make by any means.
