Loosely (more detail further below):
Democracy = rule by the people (Greek)
Republic = rule by the people (Latin)
If you want to make a meaningful distinction, distinguish between DIRECT democracy and REPRESENTATIVE democracy, which are two distinctly different approaches to 'rule by the people'.
Now, for you literalist shitbirds:
Demo+Cracy = People+Rule
Res+Publica = Matter (of/for) the People (Public)
But if you wanna continue rupturing blood vessels over this minor-to-nonexistent point of semantics, well… freedom of speech is your God-given right. Personally, I do prefer "Constitutional Republic".
